Senior Maintenance Worker

About the role

This position works as part of one of the most highly regarded park systems in the country, with more than 25,000 acres of parkland, nine RECenters, eight golf courses, three lakefront parks, and more. The role performs various semi-skilled maintenance and/or construction tasks and performs related work as required.

Responsibilities

Under general supervision, the position participates in the work of an assigned athletic field or park maintenance crew, performing semi-skilled and unskilled tasks relating to grounds maintenance and facility repairs. The role may lead a crew in the absence of Maintenance Crew Chief, inspects and approves the work of Maintenance Workers, and performs maintenance on park facilities.

• Mowing, snow removal, and other grounds maintenance tasks
• Removes litter and performs rough carpentry, light construction, minor repairs, and painting of facilities, as necessary
• Operates a tractor/bucket loader with attachments, infield groomers, utility vehicles, mowers, and other equipment
• Uses gas powered equipment such as trimmer, blower, and chainsaw
• Inspects and drives a truck with and without a trailer combination to haul equipment and materials
• Informs supervisor of conditions requiring special attention
• Maintains tools and equipment in good working order
• Completes daily work reports when supervising a crew

Requirements

The position requires a combination of education, experience, and training equivalent to completion of the tenth grade, and two years of experience in maintenance, construction, or a related field. A driver's license is also required.

• Working knowledge of small engine equipment
• Knowledge of single axle dump truck, trailer, utility bucket truck, snowplow, spreader, tank truck, and pickup truck
• Working knowledge of and the ability to use methods, tools and equipment commonly used in maintenance, construction, and grounds keeping activities
• Knowledge of occupational hazards and applicable safety practices
• Basic knowledge of computers
• Ability to lead other employees in a variety of activities, maintain records, and prepare reports
• Ability to follow written and verbal instructions
• Ability to perform activities requiring manual dexterity
• Ability to perform basic data entry
• Ability to work outside with regular exposure to severe weather, noxious fumes, high levels of dust, etc.

Qualifications

Preferred qualifications include a combination of two years of athletic field maintenance or parks ground maintenance experience, and two years of experience operating various small-engine riding equipment.

Schedule

The position works a 40-hour work week, Monday through Friday 6:30am-3:00pm, with overtime required when necessary. Occasional weekend, evening, and holiday work is also required.
