About the role

Join the Park Authority and our nationally recognized team of professionals. This position works as part of one of the most highly regarded park systems in the country, maintaining over 25,000 acres of parkland, nine RECenters, eight golf courses, three lakefront parks, and more. Under general supervision, you will perform semi-skilled maintenance and construction tasks as part of an athletic field or park maintenance crew.

Note: You will report each morning to the Area 1 Maintenance Shop, 1929 Pimmit Drive, Falls Church, VA, and be dispatched to assigned parks. This position is part of the overall labor team and is designated as Emergency Service Personnel.

Responsibilities

  • Perform semi-skilled and unskilled tasks related to grounds maintenance, facility repairs, and construction, including mowing, snow removal, rough carpentry, light construction, minor repairs, and painting.
  • Maintain park facilities such as athletic fields, sport courts, picnic areas, playgrounds, amphitheaters, trails, restrooms, parking lots, signs, and fencing.
  • Operate equipment including tractors, bucket loaders, infield groomers, utility vehicles, mowers, trimmers, blowers, chainsaws, and trucks with or without trailers.
  • Lead a crew in the absence of the Maintenance Crew Chief, inspect and approve the work of Maintenance Workers, and provide guidance and training.
  • Perform specialized tasks such as concrete and asphalt work (e.g., setting forms, finishing), constructing culverts and catch basins, and adjusting manholes.
  • Assist with spill cleanup, coordinate repair and maintenance projects (e.g., paving, sanitary sewer repairs), and transport crew and equipment to work sites.
  • Maintain tools and equipment, complete daily and preventive maintenance reports, and implement safety procedures.
  • Engage in safe working practices, report unsafe conditions, and comply with safety programs and guidelines.
  • Assist customers at homeowner’s disposal facilities, ensure proper processing of white goods for recycling, and perform related duties as required.

Requirements

  • Any combination of education, experience, and training equivalent to completion of the tenth grade and two years of experience in maintenance, construction, or a related field.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Ability to pass a criminal background check and driving record check.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Two years of athletic field maintenance or parks grounds maintenance experience.
  • Two years of experience operating small-engine riding equipment (e.g., tractors, mowers, utility vehicles) and hand-held power equipment.
  • Ability to perform manual labor.

Skills

  • Working knowledge of small engine equipment and various vehicles (e.g., single axle dump truck, snow plow, water truck, pickup truck).
  • Knowledge of methods, tools, and equipment used in maintenance, construction, and grounds keeping.
  • Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety practices.
  • Basic computer skills and ability to perform data entry.
  • Ability to lead employees, maintain records, and prepare reports.
  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions and perform tasks requiring manual dexterity.
  • Ability to work outdoors in severe weather, noxious fumes, and high levels of dust.
  • Ability to perform medium to heavy manual labor and maintain effective relationships with customers, employees, and supervisors.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to bend, stoop, crawl, and work in tiring or uncomfortable positions.
  • Ability to climb on and off equipment and lift up to 50 lbs.
  • Ability to operate grounds equipment, motor vehicles, and trailers.
  • Ability to stand or walk for extended periods and traverse uneven ground.
  • Ability to work in variable weather conditions while performing physical labor.

Schedule

  • 40-hour work week, Monday through Friday, with overtime required as necessary.
  • Occasional weekend, evening, and holiday work required.
  • Positions are subject to transfer to other maintenance operation locations.
  • Regular and predictable attendance is an essential function of the position.
