Senior Instructional Assistant (Chemistry)

Montgomery College, Rockville Campus – Bargaining, Non-Exempt, Grade 25 position. Not eligible for telework or secondary employment at Montgomery College.

About the role

The Senior Instructional Associate supports the Chemistry Department’s instructional laboratories by assisting the Instructional Lab Coordinators and Manager. This non-teaching role focuses on maintaining lab operations, preparing materials, and ensuring safety and functionality of equipment to support classroom instruction.

Schedule

• 40 hours per week, Monday–Thursday 2:00 PM–10:30 PM, Friday 8:30 AM–5:00 PM.
• Flexibility required for occasional weekend or daytime assignments.

Responsibilities

• Assemble, set up, and break down laboratory experiments, demonstrations, and practical exercises in accordance with departmental guidance.
• Prepare solutions and reagents for laboratory work.
• Clean and store laboratory glassware and equipment.
• Perform minor maintenance or troubleshooting on specialized laboratory equipment.
• Dispose of waste chemicals following hazardous waste regulations and procedures.
• Maintain safety data sheets for chemicals and laboratory results.
• Maintain laboratory areas, equipment storage, test equipment, tools, and supply/stock rooms.
• Receive, unpack, and put away deliveries of materials.
• Ensure security of equipment storage and stock rooms.
• Monitor and inventory equipment and supplies; inspect and test safety equipment.
• Identify maintenance issues for reporting to appropriate authorities.
• Assist instructors and students during labs to ensure safety and proper equipment use.
• Provide input for updating laboratory preparation books and guidance.
• Research equipment for laboratory use and contribute to purchase decisions.
• Maintain statistics on student laboratory use and prepare reports.
• May supervise student laboratory assistants.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in an academic field related to the assigned area(s) plus two (2) years of related experience. Equivalent combination of education, training, certification, and/or experience may be considered.
• Must be currently authorized to work in the United States without employer visa sponsorship.

Preferred Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry.
• Three or more years of recent experience in an instructional chemistry lab, including preparing lab materials and maintaining safety and inventory.
• Experience troubleshooting scientific instrumentation and performing small equipment repair.
• Familiarity with proper handling and disposal of chemical and hazardous waste.

Pay

• Hiring range: $29.51–$38.35 hourly. Initial salary placement based on relevant experience and internal equity.
• Maximum salary for this position: $47.20 hourly.
