Senior Finance Manager
About the role
Rising Sun is hiring a Senior Finance Manager as an integral member of the Admin/Operations team. This position is responsible for financial operations, compliance, and strategy. The Senior Finance Manager directly supervises the Contracts Manager, works closely with all members of the Admin and Operations department, and reports directly to the Chief Financial and Operating Officer (CFOO).
Responsibilities
Financial Management
Manages our third-party accounting company, ensuring bookkeeping, Accounts Payable, account reconciliations, and other contracted accounting tasks are performed accurately and on time.
Manages payroll, payroll systems, and associated staff compensation information and compliance requirements; ensures third-party accountants run payroll on time and accurately.
Provides needed documentation and reviews month-end close of books.
Manages our building's financial reporting and expense tracking for annual capitalization.
Maintains internal controls documentation and ensures segregation of duties are followed across financial processes.
Manages the organization's credit cards, including policy enforcement, limit management, and periodic review of cardholder agreements.
Reviews and approves staff expense reimbursements; ensures proper coding and policy compliance on routine transactions.Financial Compliance
Manages the organization’s annual financial audit and tax filing with support from the CFOO.
Implements systems and policies to limit potential for risk and loss.
Administers organization’s 403b retirement plan.Financial Strategy
Proactively tracks and monitors financial reports to ensure Rising Sun’s financial stability; reports budget vs. actuals variances to the Director and Executive teams.
Develops tools to help the organization better analyze financial data.
Manages the annual budgeting process.
Monitors day-to-day cash flow and prepares cash flow forecasts; escalates concerns and strategic decisions to the CFOO.Partnership with Other Departments
Collaborates with other members of the Admin/Ops team to ensure effective communication, role clarity, and efficiency.
Provides training and ongoing support to staff on financial processes and compliance requirements.
Collaborates with the Development team to maintain a fundraising strategy based informed with the realities of the organization’s financial picture.
Supports Program Directors with questions around financial reports and tracking program budgets against actuals.
Proactively identifies budget concerns and works with Department Heads to develop solutions before issues escalate.Grants and Contracts
Owns overall accountability for the grant and contract revenue cycle, ensuring committed revenue is received on schedule.
Supervises the Contracts Manager; provides guidance, reviews work product, and ensures deadlines are met across the contracts portfolio.
Reviews and approves invoices and funder financial reports before submission.
Monitors grant and contract financial health, identifying trends, risks, and variances and flagging concerns to the CFOO.
Approves routine budget modifications and contract adjustments; escalates significant changes to the CFOO.
Reviews staff hour and expense allocations and forecasts; ensures alignment with organizational budget.
Serves as escalation point for contract compliance questions and funder relationship issues.
Partners with Development team on financial aspects of new grant proposals and contract negotiations.
Requirements
5+ years finance experience, with at least 3 years in a non-profit organization
Deep understanding of non-profit finance and financial systems, including fund accounting, grant compliance, and revenue recognition
3+ years supervisory experience
Experience managing or significantly contributing to an annual audit process
Experience leading or co-leading org-wide budgeting processes
Demonstrated ability to balance competing priorities and deliver against rigorous deadlines
High IT and computer fluency: excellent Microsoft Excel and Google Sheets skills, thorough knowledge of database systems
Demonstrable sound judgment and ability to act decisively under pressure
Residency in California (preferably in the Bay Area) or the ability to move; ability to travel to our office in Oakland and/or Stockton as required or requested
Qualifications
An advanced degree in finance, accounting, or a related field
Direct experience working with any of the following software tools: QuickBooks Online, Salesforce, Rippling, Expensify, BILL
Non-profit finance certifications
A vehicle and a clean driving record; ability to drive locally, as needed

This is a permanent, full-time, exempt, salaried, and benefited position with an annual starting salary range in line with the following compensation structure:
Bay Area Resident: $89,100-$93,555
Central Valley Resident: $85,550-$89,827.50
