Senior Content Strategist
MediaNews Group, publisher of The Denver Post, San Jose Mercury News, Orange County Register, and more than 70 other daily newspapers and associated websites, is seeking a Senior Content Strategist to join its corporate editorial team. This is a remote role; candidates must reside in CO, FL, MA, MN, OH, PA, or TX.
About the role
The Senior Content Strategist will lead a nimble team of editor-producers responsible for coordinating and sharing news and features between our publications and companies. You will work closely with colleagues at Tribune Publishing (Chicago Tribune, Orlando Sentinel, and other prestigious publications) and serve as a bridge between MNG and Tribune journalists. The role involves partnering with newsrooms, product teams, and third-party vendors to maximize audience reach and content quality.
Responsibilities
- Identify trending content across our network of sites to maximize audience reach by syndicating to relevant sites and channels
- Use deep knowledge of newsroom production cadences to surface high-potential stories that haven't yet reached their peak, ensuring quality journalism gets visibility
- Communicate and engage with digital leads about hidden-gem stories
- Edit and refine syndicated posts for clarity, accuracy, and tone, maintaining high standards as content moves between local and wire formats
- Monitor and respond quickly to real-time breaking news, ensuring the network has prompt, accurate, and well-packaged updates
- Manage workflows for team and publication production
- Craft expert-level headlines and metadata balancing SEO best practices and social media engagement
- Coordinate collaborative coverage for major initiatives and special projects between MNG and Tribune journalists
- Represent newsrooms on joint projects with circulation, advertising, and product teams
- Partner with product and technical teams to evaluate, test, and implement the best CMS tools and workflows for shared content
- Proactively source and manage third-party content vendors to diversify the network’s offerings and fill niche content needs
- Deep-dive into analytics to provide actionable feedback to newsrooms on story performance, audience trends, and content gaps
- Supervise three full-time Content Strategists
Requirements
- Proven experience in a high-pressure daily newsroom or online news outlet
- Deep familiarity with social media platforms and Content Management Systems (CMS); WordPress experience a plus
- Proficiency in Google Analytics and/or real-time analytics platforms
- Strong background in news writing and copy editing, including Associated Press style guidelines and ethics
- Ability to multitask, meet deadlines, and work as a team player in a remote environment
- Comfort working with remote teams and digital collaboration tools
- Bachelor's degree in journalism, communication, marketing, or equivalent experience

- Demonstrated ability to lead projects, mentor peers, and work side-by-side with stakeholders
- Strong news judgment and technical skills for navigating a CMS
- Expertise in crafting headlines and metadata for SEO and social engagement
- Analytical skills to interpret data and provide actionable feedback

Pay
Salary: $95,000 (based on geographic location, education, work experience, time in role, certifications, and other factors).
