Responsibilities

Under medical direction, performs work requiring a high degree of knowledge and skill in the operation and monitoring of bio-medical machines. Responsible for overall administration of the bio-medical machine department in a large hospital or hospital center. Participates in research studies and performs related work.

• Serves as a member of the team with medical and nursing personnel in performing difficult or specialized treatments and examinations.
• Plans, organizes, and directs operations of the bio-medical machine department.
• Responsible for administration and coordination of the service and maintenance of the highest standards.
• Supervises technical and auxiliary staff assigned to various units and directs preparation of work schedules.
• Develops and formulates methods and procedures to govern operation of service.
• Conducts continuing evaluation of effectiveness and recommends and implements necessary changes.
• Exercises central control over inventory, requisitioning, delivery, and distribution of supplies and equipment.
• Establishes guidelines for inspection, maintenance, and repair of equipment and supplies.
• Evaluates the effectiveness of equipment and recommends and arranges for major replacements.
• Prepares budget requests for personal service, equipment, and supplies.
• Directs establishment and maintenance of a system of records and reports.
• Participates in studies and research projects.
• Provides consultative and technical advice to professional and technical personnel.
• Keeps abreast of current technical literature and puts into use new procedures previously approved by proper authority.
• Participates in planning and organizing on-the-job training and special training programs for medical, nursing, and technical staff assigned to service.
• Teaches selected subjects.

Department Preferences

• Turn on anesthesia machines in the morning before cases begin in the main OR, L&D, and GI areas.
• Run self-test on all anesthesia machines to assure compliance.
• Check that anesthesia machines and carts contain the minimum par levels of all supplies at all times.
• On a weekly basis, pick up carts from pharmacy and replace medication trays in the Main OR, L&D, and GI.
• During turnover between cases, dispose of "dirty" items such as suction, circuit, laryngoscope blades, and wipe down machines to ensure the anesthesia machine and workspace are ready for another case.
• Ensure that the anesthesia carts, machines, cabinets, and workroom(s) do not have any expired items and are stocked with minimum par levels at all times.
• Maintain and organize the anesthesia workroom(s) in an orderly manner to ensure items are functional and readily available at all times.
• Maintain a physical presence in designated perioperative areas with readiness to assist anesthesiologists/CRNAs as needed at all times.
• At the end of scheduled cases, promptly re-stock carts, cabinets, and machines to maintain minimum supply par levels.
• Stock anesthesia workroom(s) when supplies go below par levels.
• Maintain inventory of all supplies in the anesthesia workroom and give an accurate weekly report to the supervisor of items needed to be ordered once the par level is reached.
• Demonstrate knowledge of how to operate and troubleshoot problems with anesthesia equipment.

Qualifications

• Associate Degree, which included coursework in the Bio-Medical Technician field, and three years of experience in the appropriate bio-medical technician field in an approved hospital or health facility; or
• Senior high school graduation or possession of a High School Equivalency Diploma, and four years of experience in the appropriate bio-medical technical field in an approved hospital or health facility; or
• A satisfactory equivalent combination of education and experience.

Employees performing blood analysis require certificates of qualification issued by the New York City Department of Health in the subspecialty of 29 (Ph blood gases) or specialty 28 (general clinical chemistry).
