About the Job

This is a continuous posting for the Extension Department of Youth Development. This posting is for roles like 4-H overnight summer camp and Arts In programs, and similar roles and assisting current Extension Educators, Professors and the department to fulfill its goals and responsibilities. These roles provide flexible, high-impact assistance across key programming, administrative and logistical functions of the department. The primary purpose of these positions is to support program and administrative functions. These positions are not eligible for overtime and hours are worked mainly on a specific camp, fair or other site location.

About the Positions

Positions located across Minnesota, based on camp and arts in program needs. Positions may include work both indoors and outdoors in varied weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, etc. Interest in available locations and roles will be collected in the required job screening questionnaire.

Work Schedule

Weekly work schedule is flexible and will be 0 - 40+ hours per week, depending on the program needs. Work may take place during the work day, evenings or weekends. Some positions may require overnight work arrangements. Work schedule may include travel to various sites for programming. A specific work schedule will be determined with the supervisor.

Camp Director

  • Oversee the planning and preparation of 4-H camp under the direction of the Extension Educator. Execute a safe and quality experience for 4-H youth.
  • Under the directive of the Extension Educator, or their designee:
    • Be on-site and present at camp location(s). May include staying overnight, time before camp, and after camp ends.
    • Work with Extension Staff to prepare and deliver counselor training sessions and camper programming
    • Work with counselors to plan a variety of recreation programs for campers; supervise camp counselors and assist counselors in all activity areas
    • Work with counselors to schedule downtime and handle needs as they arise
    • Aid counselor and health aide to manage communication about camper homesickness issues with Extension staff
    • Facilitate all camp activities during emergency procedures
    • Aid with camper check-in at registration and throughout the week as needed
    • Enforce camp rules and regulations
    • Model standards for conduct as they pertain to camp staff and campers, including language, appearance and behavior
    • Support and embrace inclusion in all interactions with campers, other staff members, volunteers and parents. Implement programs that engage differing backgrounds, interests and learning styles
    • Manage conflicts as they arise.

Required Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required
  • Must be at least 21 years old by the start date
  • The ability to organize and motivate youth while nurturing positive youth development, decision making, responsibility, and leadership
  • The ability to communicate effectively with youth, parents, adult volunteers, and staff
  • Good problem-solving skills and a solid understanding of risk management
  • Experience working with youth or as a camp counselor
  • Experience working with youth in an outdoor camp setting
  • Must be able to work indoors and outdoors in varied weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, etc; and this role will need the ability to plan for and communicate in/for/during emergency or other weather actions or events.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Two years of education/experience in youth development education or camp
  • CPR and/or first aid training

Camp Night Support

  • Ensure a safe and positive overnight experience for 4-H members attending camp.
  • Under the directive of the Extension Educator, or their designee:
    • Serve as the primary adult in charge during the overnight hours of camp
    • Provide a safe, positive experience for youth during the overnight hours of camp
    • Aid counselors in overseeing campers during the evening schedule, including but not limited to bed checks during the overnight hours and connecting with counselors and health aide staff as needed
    • Ensure that the camp experience promotes positive youth development and that 4-H members follow the code of conduct
    • Aid with clean up at the end of camp
    • Provide feedback and recommendations to 4-H staff for improving the quality of the experience

Camp Coordinator of Camp Counselors

  • Provide direction to counselors during 4-H camp week that results in a safe and quality experience for 4-H youth.
  • Under the directive of the Extension Educator, or their designee:
    • Be on-site and present at camp (may include staying overnight, time prior to camp, and after camp ends)
    • Collaborate with counselors and staff to organize a variety of recreation programs for campers; work with Extension Staff to prepare and deliver counselor training sessions and camper programming efforts
    • Work with counselors to schedule downtime and respond to additional needs as they come up
    • Model standards for conduct as they pertain to camp staff and campers, including language, appearance, and behavior
    • Support and embrace inclusive and respectful interactions with counselors, campers, other staff members, volunteers, and parents. Implement programs that engage a wide range of backgrounds, interests, and learning styles
    • Other duties as assigned

  • 18 years old by the start date.
  • The ability to organize and motivate youth while nurturing positive youth development, decision-making, responsibility, and leadership
  • The ability to communicate effectively with youth and staff
  • Good problem-solving skills and a solid understanding of risk management
  • Experience working with youth or as a camp counselor
  • Experience working with youth in an outdoor camp setting
  • Must be able to work indoors and outdoors in varied weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, etc; and this role will need the ability to plan for and communicate in/for/during emergency or other weather actions or events.

Preferred qualification:

  • 21 years old by the start date (must be 21 to be one of the two required overnight staff on duty)

Arts In Director

  • Lead the local 4-H arts-in program planning, rehearsal and performances that create opportunities for the positive growth and development of young people. Develop important life skills in youth and create opportunities for youth to learn, lead, and serve.
  • Under the directive of the Extension Educator, or their designee:
    • Engage 4-H members in participating in a 20 to 25-minute performing arts program
    • Identify community resources, connections and curricula needed for this activity
    • Manage finances with guidance and support from local program staff
    • Aid and guide youth participants in selecting and working on age- and developmentally-appropriate production and activities related to production (acting; costume and prop-making, staging; sound, lighting, and other technical support; student directing, etc.)
    • Oversee communications to Arts-In participants and their parents/guardians
    • Ensure water and food are available as needed for participants
    • Appropriately address areas of conflict (creative, interpersonal, and performance-based) as needed
    • Aid participants in team-building and in reflecting on their development of life skills via Arts-In participation
    • Other duties as assigned

Required Qualifications:

  • Must be at least 18 years old by the start date
  • A sincere interest in teaching and sharing knowledge and skills with youth in an educational setting
  • The ability to organize and motivate youth while nurturing positive youth development, decision-making, responsibility, and leadership
  • The ability to communicate effectively with youth, parents, and other adult volunteers and staff
  • The ability to effectively delegate responsibility
  • Education/experience in theater, education, or similar arts program

Preferred qualifications:

  • Experience working with youth preferably in a theater/musical performance area
  • Two years of education/experience in theater, education, or two years in a similar Arts-In program

Arts In Assistant

  • Assist the local 4-H Arts-in Director with program planning, rehearsal, and performances that create opportunities for the positive growth and development of young people. Develop important life skills in youth and create opportunities for youth to learn, lead, and serve.
  • Under the directive of the Extension Educator, or their designee:
    • Aid and guide youth members in production and activities related to production (performing; costume and prop-making, staging; sound, lighting, and other technical support; student directing, etc.)
    • Aid Arts-In Director and 4-H youth with set and costume needs.
    • Aid the Arts-In Director and 4-H youth with the desired music, including revising the music with the Director’s cuts, lyrics, and number of verses.
    • Support the positive development of 4-H members
    • Other duties as assigned
