- Urban Agriculture Youth Leader, $15.25-$16.50/hour

About the Positions

This is a continuous posting for the Extension Department of Youth Development. This posting is for roles like Site Coordinator, fair coordinator, communications assistant, urban agriculture youth leader, and similar roles and assisting current Extension Educators, Professors and the department fulfil its goals and responsibilities. These roles provide flexible, high-impact assistance across key programming, administrative and logistical functions of the department. The primary purpose of these positions is to support program and administrative functions. These temporary positions are limited to 67 work days per calendar year at the University of Minnesota. The positions are needed in the summer, typically between April and October, with most work being done June-August.

Location and Work environment

Positions located across Minnesota, typically based out of county or regional Extension offices; some or many hours might be completed in a site/ space where programming is being conducted, could be on county or other fairgrounds, or in specific garden locations. Interest in available locations and roles will be collected in the required job screening questionnaire survey. Specific locations and work will be discussed in the interviews for these positions.

Work Schedule

Schedules vary per role, but employees cannot work more than 67 days of work in a calendar year. Hours are worked during the days, evenings and weekends depending on the position and location. Schedules will be determined by the supervisor, and hours are reported by the employee on a timesheet each week or pay period. Interest in available locations and roles will be collected in the required job screening questionnaire survey. Specific locations and work will be discussed in the interviews for these positions.

Positions

  • Youth Development Temporary
    This role will be utilized to complete various duties on an as needed basis. Work may include supporting a county or a regional educator or office, may assist with camp, fair or other related programming or event coordination or related duties as assigned and will typically report to a Program Leader, or other administrator in the department. Pay Range: $15.25-21.00 an hour. Works 0-40 hours per week, varies depending on work available. A specific work schedule will be determined with the supervisor.
  • 4-H Fair Coordinator
    To provide additional support to the 4-H program for the county fair. Pay range: $15.25-$21 an hour. Hours will fluctuate, may work up to 40 hours per week; may include days, weekends, evenings or all. Work time may include pre-event, the length of the event, and post-event. A specific work schedule will be determined with the supervisor.
  • 4-H Summer High School Assistant
    To provide additional support to the 4-H program. This position is specifically designed for high school students doing prep work at the Extension Office and assisting at 4-H programs and events. Pay rate: $15.25 an hour. Hours will fluctuate, may work up to 40 hours per week; may include days, weekends, evenings or all. Work time may include pre-event, the length of the event, and post-event. A specific work schedule will be determined with the supervisor.
  • 4-H Site Coordinator
    Overview: Coordinate 4-H programming at a site-based location. Pay range: $15.25-$21 an hour. May work up to 40 hours per week (may work days, evening, weekend, or all depending on program schedule). A specific work schedule will be determined with the supervisor.
  • 4-H Communications
    Provide additional support to Extension staff in marketing, public relations, and storytelling efforts for both internal and external audiences. Pay range: $15.25-$16.18 an hour based on the student wage scale. May work up to 40 hours per week (may work days, evening, weekend, or all depending on program schedule). A specific work schedule will be determined with the supervisor.
  • Urban Agriculture Youth Leader
    The Urban Agriculture Initiative, a partnership between Hennepin County and the University of Minnesota’s Hennepin County Extension, is transforming 2 vacant lots into gardens where community, food, health and wellbeing come together to create neighborhood gathering and growing spaces. We are seeking high school and undergrad students, age 16 and older, who like working outside and have an interest in food justice and food access. As the Youth Leader, you will play an important role alongside community mentors, community members, and other partners.

Required Qualifications

    - Must be at least 18 years old by the start date.
    - Basic experience with word processing, email, and internet browsers.
    - Proficient in oral and written English communication skills.

    - Good problem-solving skills and a solid understanding of risk management
    - Ability to work at varying work locations, often or occasionally in the same work day
    - Valid driver’s license and own means of transportation with required liability insurance. Mileage reimbursement provided in accordance with University policy.
    - Must have the ability to lift, carry, pull, and push 20 pounds
  • 4-H Fair Coordinator

    - Must be at least 18 years old by the start date

  • 4-H Summer High School Assistant

    - High school student, cannot have graduated (must be 16 years old)
    - The ability to perform multiple tasks concurrently is necessary
    - Clerical and organizational skills
    - Must complete University of Minnesota payroll paperwork and have a successful employee background check at the time the position begins
    - Must have the ability to lift, carry, pull, and push 20 pounds
  • 4-H Site Coordinator

    - High school diploma or equivalent required
    - Must be at least 18 years old by the start date.
    - Basic experience with word processing, email and internet browsers.
    - Proficient in oral and written English communication skills.

    - This role is for high school and undergrad students. (UMN undergrad students are not eligible to be hired in this job classification.)
    - Must be at least 16 years old by the start date.
    - Ability to perform multiple tasks concurrently is necessary
    - Clerical and organizational skills
    - Valid driver’s license and own means of transportation with required liability insurance. Mileage reimbursement provided in accordance with University policy.
    - Proficient in oral and written English communication skills.
    - The ability to communicate effectively with youth, parents, adult volunteers and staff
    - Experience writing and editing for websites and social media including Facebook, X (Twitter), and Instagram
    - Knowledge of application platforms Canva and social media schedulers
    - Coursework in journalism, communications, marketing, or a related field
