Youth Development Summer Health Care Aide and Lifeguard (continuous post)

This is a continuous posting for the Extension Department of Youth Development. This posting is for seasonal roles like health care aides and lifeguards, and similar roles. These positions provide flexible, high-impact assistance across key programming, administrative and logistical functions of the department. The primary purpose of these positions is to contribute to safe and healthy environments during youth programming.

About the Positions

Positions located across Minnesota, based on health care and life guard needs. Positions may include work both indoors and outdoors in varied weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, etc. Interest in available locations and roles will be collected in the required job screening questionnaire.

Work Schedule

Weekly work schedule is flexible and will be 0 - 40+ hours per week, depending on the program needs. Work may take place during the work day, evenings, or weekends. Some positions may require overnight work arrangements. Work schedule may include travel to various sites for programming. A specific work schedule will be determined with the supervisor.

Positions

• 4-H Camp Health Care Aide

  Evaluate and treat campers and staff for minor injuries and illnesses, ensure implementation of medication policies and procedures at camp, keep a log of visits, and identify health problems serious enough to require a physician’s attention.

• Lifeguard

  Ensure a safe and positive waterfront environment as part of a 4-H activity. Ensure that youth are comfortable in the water at a safe depth before being allowed to go into deeper water. (If they do not pass, restrict non-swimmers to shallow water or designated alternate on land location.) Enforce event/camp rules and regulations; model standards for conduct as they pertain to staff and youth.

Required Qualifications

• Required to complete job screening questionnaire to be considered for any roles ( https://z.umn.edu/healthlifeguardscreen )
• High school diploma or equivalent required
• Current CPR and first aid certifications
• Ability to get to remote locations on the camp property over rough terrain
• Ability to keep accurate health records and reports
• Ability to handle stressful medical situations and maintain confidentiality and privacy during medical situations

Preferred Qualifications

• Current EMT, LPN, or RN license with the State of Minnesota
• Experience working with school-aged youth is desired

Additional Requirements/Working Conditions for All positions

• A willingness to become familiar with and work within the philosophy and guidelines of University of Minnesota Extension, the Minnesota 4-H program, and the local 4-H program
• Must complete all required trainings, including but not limited to Safety of Minors and Civil Rights training
• Must have the ability to lift, carry, pull, and push 20 pounds
• Must be able to stand for 90 minutes at a time or sit for 90 minutes at a time. Some days will require hours of standing or sitting
• Must complete University of Minnesota payroll paperwork, including completing an in-person I-9 (identification verification process), and have a successful completion of a background check with motor vehicle record review before the first day of work

Pay and Benefits

• Pay Range: Depending on education, qualifications, experience, and position type: 4-H Camp Health Care Aide, $20-$26 an hour Lifeguard, $15.25-$17.25 an hour
