About the Role

The School Safety Monitor is responsible for ensuring the safety and security of students and staff, maintaining order, protecting school property, and enforcing school rules and regulations.

Responsibilities

• Patrol school halls, stairwells, restrooms, courtyards, entrances, parking lots, and other parts of school buildings and grounds to protect persons and property, maintain order, and ensure compliance with school rules.
• Provide security of persons and property while improving the atmosphere for the conduct of the program of studies.
• Establish a rapport with students to assist them with their problems or refer them to someone on the professional staff who can help.
• Report periodically to the principal on problems, incidents, and conditions affecting security, either orally or in writing.
• Recommend and implement procedures and best practices to prevent, deter, and deescalate incidents at schools.
• Advise the Culture Team, Leadership Team, or Counselors about potential or actual student problems concerning class-cutting, truancy, disciplinary problems, or other school or personal issues.
• Help students adjust, learn, socialize, and report possible behavioral issues.
• Communicate effectively with students, families, and colleagues.
• Perform other duties as outlined by School Leadership.
• Comply with all charter, federal, state, and local laws and regulations, including the NYS Department of Education, Department of Health, and NYS Office of Children and Family Services.

Requirements

• High School degree / GED, required.
• Minimum of 1 year of experience in student service work, recreation, education, or any other activity involving service to students.
• Experience with oversight of students in a school setting is desirable.
• Prior experience working in schools and urban communities is preferred.
• Ability to work a flexible schedule outside of regular business hours.
• Aptitude to create and work within an inclusive environment that honors and supports a diversity of backgrounds and perspectives.

Physical Requirements

• Prolonged periods spent sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
• Must be able to access and navigate all areas of the school and other facilities as needed.
• Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
• The employee needs to read, write, and speak English fluently.
• While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to stand, walk, sit, use fingers to type, handle or feel objects, tools, or controls, reach with hands and arms, climb stairs, balance; stoop/bend and reach, kneel, crouch or crawl; talk, hear.
• Dexterity requires writing and operating standard office machines such as computers, printers, copiers, fax machines, phones, and calculators.
• Ability to occasionally lift and move up to 20 pounds.

Pay

KIPP Capital Region offers a competitive salary ranging from $39,000 - $44,821. Salaries are determined using an equitable compensation scale that accounts for years of experience relevant to the role and longevity within the KIPP network. KIPP Capital Region will evaluate and determine the step/level a new hire will be placed within our salary scale at point of hire.
