Crossing Guard
- Gives clear, concise hand signals to stop vehicular and/or pedestrian traffic to prevent movement of vehicular traffic until all pedestrians have completely crossed the street.
- Makes sure signals are understood and obeyed before moving either vehicular or pedestrian traffic to ensure school children cross only at proper and designated locations.
- Notes any present or potential traffic hazards and report it to the Sheriff’s Office as soon as possible.
- Reports any vehicle code violations and write reports as necessary.
- Attends appropriate training sessions/meetings as requested or required by immediate supervisor, Sheriff’s Office or Safety & Security Office.
- Enforce school rules and regulations.
- Reports students and/or pedestrians who do not adhere to safe street crossing procedures to his/her immediate supervisor.
Cafeteria Host
- Aid with the orderly progression of students through the cafeteria lines and seating at the appropriate tables.
- Monitor students’ behavior.
- Facilitate the movement of students through the cafeteria in an orderly and appropriate manner.
- Assist students with their lunches, if required, i.e., opening milk cartons, collecting appropriate utensils, etc.
- Clean up spills and dropped food, as required, to maintain a safe environment.
- Aid with the cleaning of tables and the sweeping of the floors following the lunch period.
Safety Monitor
- Ensures that students, employees, and visitors are aware of the district's on-site safety policies and its potential consequences for violations.
- Reports incidents, surveys student behavior, and visually scans various areas for the purpose of ensuring students, staff and building are in compliance with established regulations and maintaining a safe and positive learning environment.
- Provides direction, control and supervision by escorting students, assigned personnel, and/or guests to offices and/or special locations.
- Maintains administrative visibility, accountability and protection by keeping a close eye on the school's facilities, approach outsiders, and point them in the right direction.
- Makes sure facilities (e.g. restrooms, hallways, cafeteria, school grounds, parking lot, etc.) are consistently checked for the purpose of ensuring student compliance with established guidelines, maintaining a safe and positive learning environment.
Education and Experience
- High School Diploma or its equivalent.
- Valid Virginia Driver’s License.
- Must be 18 years of age.
- Must be certified by the Sheriff’s Office to conduct Crossing Guard duties.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Knowledge:
- Basic safety rules for school buildings.
- Basic safe driving rules and procedures for Crossing Guards.
- Basic food safety guidelines for Cafeteria Hostesses.
- Techiques for communicating with children and adults.
- English and grammar usage.
- Current Virginia traffic laws and emergency procedures.
Skills
- Complete Handle with Care Training.
- Complete First Aid/CPR/AED Training.
- For Crossing Guard: Direct and control vehicular and pedestrian traffic through arm and hand signals, after training by the Stafford County Sheriff’s Office and the Stafford County Public Schools’ Safety & Security Office, use hand-held stop sign, reflector vest, cones, whistle, gloves and communication equipment, and judge traffic flow, speed and direction of travel and group pedestrians in a logical manner.
- For Cafeteria Host: Child Development and behavior management techniques and supervise children in the absence of a supervisor.
