School Safety Monitor Part-Time

About the Role

Under the supervision of the School Principal, this position provides assistance as either a School Crossing Guard and/or Cafeteria Host with shared responsibilities for ensuring the safety and welfare of students during classroom and non-classroom activities. The role aims to minimize harmful incidents and communicate observations that impact the well-being of students, staff, and visitors.

The School Crossing Guard assists in controlling vehicular and pedestrian traffic at assigned locations to ensure the safety of school children and the orderly flow of traffic. The Cafeteria Host monitors student behavior and facilitates orderly progression through the cafeteria during lunch periods.

Responsibilities

Crossing Guard Duties

• Provide clear hand signals to stop vehicular and/or pedestrian traffic until all pedestrians have safely crossed the street.
• Ensure signals are understood and obeyed before allowing traffic or pedestrian movement.
• Note and report present or potential traffic hazards to the Sheriff’s Office.
• Report vehicle code violations and write necessary reports.
• Attend required training sessions or meetings as directed by supervisors, the Sheriff’s Office, or the Safety & Security Office.
• Enforce school rules and regulations.
• Report students or pedestrians who do not follow safe crossing procedures to a supervisor.

Cafeteria Host Duties

• Assist with the orderly progression of students through cafeteria lines and seating.
• Monitor and manage student behavior in the cafeteria.
• Facilitate the movement of students in an orderly manner.
• Assist students with tasks such as opening milk cartons or collecting utensils.
• Clean up spills and dropped food to maintain a safe environment.
• Assist with cleaning tables and sweeping floors after lunch.

Safety Monitor Duties

• Ensure students, employees, and visitors are aware of the district’s on-site safety policies and consequences for violations.
• Report incidents and survey student behavior to maintain compliance with safety regulations.
• Provide direction and supervision by escorting students, staff, or guests to designated locations.
• Monitor school facilities (e.g., restrooms, hallways, cafeteria, grounds, parking lot) to ensure a safe and positive learning environment.
• Approach and direct outsiders to maintain administrative visibility and accountability.

Requirements

• High School Diploma or equivalent.
• Valid Virginia Driver’s License.
• Must be 18 years of age.
• Must be certified by the Sheriff’s Office to conduct Crossing Guard duties.

Skills and Abilities

Knowledge

• Basic safety rules for school buildings.
• Safe driving rules and procedures for Crossing Guards.
• Basic food safety guidelines for Cafeteria Hosts.
• Techniques for communicating with children and adults.
• English and grammar usage.
• Current Virginia traffic laws and emergency procedures.

Skills

• Complete Handle with Care Training.
• Complete First Aid/CPR/AED Training.
• For Crossing Guard: Direct and control vehicular and pedestrian traffic using hand signals, stop signs, reflector vests, cones, whistles, gloves, and communication equipment.
• For Cafeteria Host: Child development and behavior management techniques; ability to supervise children in the absence of a supervisor.

Working Conditions and Physical Requirements

The work environment includes both indoor and outdoor settings with exposure to weather conditions, proximity to roadways, moving mechanical parts, and traffic. The role may involve moderate noise, extreme temperatures, and no exposure to chemicals or poor air quality.

The position involves light work, requiring exertion of up to 20 pounds of force to move or lift objects. Essential physical and mental abilities include:

• Standing or sitting for prolonged periods.
• Repetitive movement of hands, wrists, or fingers.
• Repetitive force on the back or lower body.
• Feeling, grasping, or holding objects by hand.
• Identifying colors and objects in low light or distant conditions.

Pay

Pay Grade: Unified Salary Scale U050.

Schedule

10-month work calendar, 185 days per year.
