Location: School Based • Pay Grade: Unified Salary Scale U050 • Work Calendar: 10 Month, 185 Day Employee • FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

About the Role

Under the supervision of the School Principal, this position provides assistance as either a School Crossing Guard and/or Cafeteria Host with shared responsibilities for ensuring the safety and welfare of students during classroom and non-classroom activities. The role focuses on minimizing harmful incidents and communicating observations that impact the well-being of students, staff, and visitors.

Responsibilities

Crossing Guard Duties

  • Give clear, concise hand signals to stop vehicular and/or pedestrian traffic to ensure safe street crossing for students.
  • Ensure signals are understood and obeyed before allowing traffic or pedestrian movement.
  • Note and report any present or potential traffic hazards to the Sheriff’s Office.
  • Report vehicle code violations and write necessary reports.
  • Attend training sessions/meetings as required by the supervisor, Sheriff’s Office, or Safety & Security Office.
  • Enforce school rules and regulations.
  • Report students or pedestrians who do not follow safe crossing procedures.

Cafeteria Host Duties

  • Assist with the orderly progression of students through cafeteria lines and seating.
  • Monitor students’ behavior and facilitate movement in an orderly manner.
  • Assist students with lunches, such as opening milk cartons or collecting utensils.
  • Clean up spills and dropped food to maintain a safe environment.
  • Assist with cleaning tables and sweeping floors after lunch.

Safety Monitor Duties

  • Ensure students, employees, and visitors are aware of on-site safety policies and consequences for violations.
  • Report incidents, survey student behavior, and scan areas to maintain compliance with safety regulations.
  • Provide direction and supervision by escorting students, staff, or guests to designated locations.
  • Monitor facilities (e.g., restrooms, hallways, cafeteria, school grounds, parking lot) to ensure a safe learning environment.
  • Approach outsiders on school premises and direct them appropriately.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Valid Virginia Driver’s License.
  • Must be 18 years of age.
  • Must be certified by the Sheriff’s Office to conduct Crossing Guard duties.

Skills and Abilities

Knowledge

  • Basic safety rules for school buildings.
  • Safe driving rules and procedures for Crossing Guards.
  • Basic food safety guidelines for Cafeteria Hosts.
  • Techniques for communicating with children and adults.
  • English and grammar usage.
  • Current Virginia traffic laws and emergency procedures.

Skills

  • Complete Handle with Care Training.
  • Complete First Aid/CPR/AED Training.
  • For Crossing Guard: Direct and control vehicular and pedestrian traffic using hand signals, stop signs, reflector vests, cones, whistles, gloves, and communication equipment.
  • For Cafeteria Host: Child development and behavior management techniques; ability to supervise children in the absence of a supervisor.

Working Conditions and Physical Requirements

The work environment includes both indoor and outdoor settings with exposure to weather conditions near roadways, moving mechanical parts, and traffic. The role may involve moderate noise, extreme temperatures, and no exposure to chemicals or poor air quality.

  • Light work, requiring exertion of up to 20 pounds of force to move or lift objects.
  • Physical and mental abilities required include:
    • Standing or sitting for prolonged periods.
    • Repetitive movement of hands, wrists, or fingers.
    • Repetitive force on the back or lower body.
    • Feeling, grasping, or holding objects by hand.
    • Visual identification of colors and objects in low light or distant conditions.
    • Effective communication via spoken and written language.
    • Perceiving sounds.
    • Making decisions using logic and rational thinking.
