About the Role

ASDB Drivers are tasked with the vital responsibility of protecting our students on their way to and from school. Drivers ensure that students get to school and back home safely every day. They are required to know their students and be aware of their different disabilities to make their transportation times as comfortable and safe as possible. They are the first school workers to greet students in the morning and the last to wave goodbye to them in the afternoon.

This is a safety-sensitive position requiring pre-employment and random drug testing for the duration of employment.

Responsibilities

• Safely operate a yellow school bus and transport school-aged children and other authorized personnel over specified routes to and from schools and various activities.
• Conduct pre-trip and post-trip inspections of the vehicle.
• Observe safety regulations and policies, enforce student discipline in the vehicle.
• Maintain logs on attendance, repairs, and/or changes to routes.
• Perform daily pre-trip inspections per licensing requirements.
• Safely transport students according to time schedules.
• Recognize and report problems in the operation of a school bus.
• Deal with residents and members of the public courteously and respectfully, including receiving and addressing complaints about schedules and service quality.

Requirements

• Must have a minimum of 2 years of driving experience.
• Must be able to obtain a Motor Vehicle Report, pass a physical, drug screen, and PPT test.
• Must be prepared to participate in ASL classes provided by the Agency and learn a vocabulary of frequently used words to communicate in ASL with students and staff.
• Must be able to pass FBI and State background check or obtain a Fingerprint Clearance Card.
• Must complete Defensive Driver Training Program.
• Must obtain CIT (Crisis Intervention Training), CPR, and First Aid Certification if working directly with students.
• Must hold a valid Arizona State Driver's License in good standing.
• Must be willing to participate in annual and random drug and alcohol testing.
• Must possess a CDL P & S and DPS certification (CDL Training provided).

Skills

• Knowledge of policies, procedures, and programs of the immediate work unit.
• Understanding of principles and practices of administration and management.
• Familiarity with agency or program rules, regulations, and operating procedures.
• Knowledge of Arizona rules/regulations related to pupil transportation.
• Ability to read gauges and indicators of a vehicle and prepare reports.
• Proficiency in CPR, First Aid, and bus evacuation procedures.
• Ability to operate the assigned vehicle safely and in compliance with Arizona statutes.
• Ability to maintain a courteous and professional manner.
• Ability to follow the scheduled route within the allotted timeline.
• Effective communication of information and ideas.
