Salary range: $27.04–30.13. This position will remain open until filled with preference given to applications received by Sunday, August 2 by 4:00 PM.
Primary Objective of Position
The Scheduling and Service Support Specialist is responsible for all transit operator and dispatcher scheduling. This position maintains the Fixed Route and Dial-a-Ride system scheduling and service adjustments in consultation with Operations Managers and Street Supervisors. Maintains computer software with updated scheduling and updates to service and planning functions.
Responsibilities
- Prepares and maintains all operator and dispatcher schedules in accordance with the collective bargaining agreement, personnel policies, and established procedures to ensure adequate staffing.
- Utilizes and maintains scheduling software to effectively and efficiently staff all shifts.
- Schedules all safety-sensitive drug and alcohol random testing as part of Metro Bus’ Drug and Alcohol Program.
- Schedules all special transportation events.
- Prepares Operator and Dispatcher work schedules.
- Administers work and vacation bidding process.
- Adjusts schedules accordingly based on unplanned absences and service needs.
- Documents scheduling issues and violations per the collective bargaining agreement and Metro Bus personnel policies.
- Provides service support to the Operations department as directed by the Operations Manager.
- Performs operator and dispatcher fit-for-duty checks.
- Maintains charter exemption information related to routes, runs, and extra work details.
- Provides labor relations support to the Operations Managers and Director of Human Resources.
- Attends employer negotiation committee meetings to provide input regarding labor negotiations strategies; attends labor negotiation sessions when requested.
- Has access to labor relations data and prepares draft negotiation language and provides input as requested by the management team.
- Under the direction of the Operations Manager, schedules fact-finding and/or disciplinary meetings; informs employees of right to union representation and schedules Union Steward attendance in meetings upon employee request.
- Provides actual performance and procedure data to the management team during contract negotiations.
- Communicates courteously and professionally and maintains respectful working relationships with coworkers and customers in carrying out job functions.
- Performs all job duties in compliance with safety guidelines and with an ongoing awareness of safety practices.
- Knows and follows safety rules and guidelines as well as sound work and safety practices in order to accomplish the job objectives and avoid injury or loss.
- Wears proper protective equipment when policy requires or conditions indicate a need exists and utilizes proper body mechanics and ergonomics while performing work.
- When potentially unsafe conditions are observed, makes efforts to avoid or correct them if they are controllable and draws them to the attention of the responsible supervisor or safety representative in a timely manner.
- Performs other duties and activities as assigned.
Requirements
- Two (2) year degree in administrative support, business, or related field and two (2) years of operations, scheduling, or business/office management experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- A valid driver’s license or evidence of equivalent mobility.

- Verbal and written communication skills sufficient to effectively read technical documents and effectively communicate with team members. Bilingual a plus.
- Interpersonal skills sufficient to exchange and/or convey information, receive work direction, and maintain effective working relationships with all levels of employees, committees, and groups; and to diffuse situations/conversations that have escalated beyond normal limits.
Desirable Qualifications
- Knowledge of local service areas, Metro Bus transit system, routes and fares, transportation operations, policies, procedures, rules, and regulations.
- Experience with scheduling software.
Physical Demands and Working Environment
- This position is alternately in an office environment requiring alternating periods of sitting, standing, and walking.
- Minimal exposure to temperature extremes, noise, physical, and/or chemical hazards.
- Utilizes computers, phone, and other office equipment on a regular basis.
- May require limited travel outside of the office. Will utilize a Metro Bus or personal vehicle for travel.
