About the Role
This position involves performing solid waste collection routes efficiently and safely while providing excellent customer service to residents. The role requires operating an automated truck, maintaining equipment, and adhering to city and state policies.
Responsibilities
- Learn and memorize routes consisting of 1,200 to 1,300 residents while safely driving and operating an automated truck with a hydraulic arm.
- Maintain vigilance for citizens, parked vehicles, overhead power lines, and other hazards to ensure safe daily operations.
- Lift and empty garbage and recycle bins as part of assigned routes.
- Complete WebQa/311 work orders, update logs, and report violations or unsafe conditions via radio communication.
- Conduct pre- and post-trip inspections on equipment and perform basic maintenance, including washing and cleaning the truck.
- Train or assist in training new employees using prior experience and equipment knowledge.
- Respond to customer inquiries and concerns in a polite and courteous manner.
- Attend bi-weekly safety meetings and comply with all city and state policies and ordinances.
- Drive a City vehicle for official business.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- High School Diploma or G.E.D.
- At least two (2) years of truck driving experience.
- Valid Texas Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) B (CDL A is desirable).
Skills
- Ability to build and maintain effective working relationships.
- Clear and effective oral and written communication skills in English; oral communication in Spanish is a plus.
- Strong planning and organizational skills.
- Ability to follow and give directions effectively.
- Capability to perform strenuous and routine physical work.
- Ability to maintain a valid Texas Driver License and a good driving record.
- Professional demeanor and ability to represent the City of Laredo positively.
- Compliance with all City of Laredo policies and procedures.
- Good health and physical condition sufficient to perform the duties of the position.
Physical Effort & Work Environment
- Frequent exposure to unpleasant environmental conditions, including extreme heat (above 100°F), loud noises (85+ decibels), moving mechanical parts, fumes, toxic chemicals, and outdoor work near moving traffic or construction sites.
- Occasional exposure to extreme cold (below 32°F), confined spaces, hostile or irate individuals, and individuals with violent backgrounds.
- Physical demands include exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, up to 50 pounds frequently, and up to 20 pounds constantly to move objects.
- Majority of work is performed outdoors or in environments with exposure to risk.
- Frequent local travel required; driving a City vehicle is a key part of the role.
