About the Role

Collect solid waste along assigned routes within the specified time frame while providing courteous customer service to residents.

Responsibilities

  • Learn and memorize routes serving 1,200–1,300 residents while safely operating an automated truck equipped with a hydraulic arm.
  • Lift and empty garbage and recycling bins using the truck’s automated system.
  • Maintain situational awareness of citizens, parked vehicles, overhead power lines, and other hazards to ensure safe daily operations.
  • Complete assigned WebQa/311 work orders, update logs, and report violations or unsafe conditions to customer service via radio.
  • Perform pre- and post-trip inspections of equipment and conduct basic maintenance, including washing the truck and cleaning the chute and interior.
  • Train or assist in training new employees using prior experience and equipment proficiency.
  • Respond to customer inquiries and concerns in a polite, professional manner.
  • Attend bi-weekly safety meetings and comply with all city and state policies and ordinances.
  • Drive a City vehicle for official business as required.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or G.E.D.
  • Minimum of two years of truck driving experience.
  • Valid Texas Commercial Driver License (CDL) Class B; CDL Class A is desirable.
  • Out-of-state applicants must obtain a Texas driver license within six months of employment.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in English (both orally and in writing) and orally in Spanish.
  • Good health and physical condition sufficient to perform strenuous duties, including frequent lifting of up to 35 pounds and constant movement of up to 20 pounds.

Work Environment

  • Frequent outdoor work in extreme temperatures (below 32°F / above 100°F).
  • Often exposed to moving mechanical parts, fumes, airborne particles, and loud noises (85+ decibels).
  • Frequent exposure to hostile or irate individuals, individuals with violent backgrounds, and communicable diseases.
  • Frequent contact with toxic or caustic chemicals.
  • Majority of work performed in street environments near moving traffic or on construction sites.
  • Local travel required; no regional, national, or international travel.
