About the role

Accomplish assigned solid waste collection routes within the given time frame. Provide customer service to citizen inquiries, comments, or concerns. Use caution in surrounding areas to ensure route is done in a safe manner.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

• Is responsible for learning and memorizing routes consisting of 1,200 to 1,300 residents while safely driving and utilizing an automated truck.
• Maintains vigilance of surroundings looking out for citizens, parked vehicles, overhead power lines, etc., in order to assure safe operations on a daily basis.
• Is responsible for safely carrying out and completing assigned route while operating automated truck mounted with a hydraulic arm and lifting and emptying garbage and recycle bins.
• Carries out and completes assigned WebQa/311 work orders, keep logs updated and reporting violations and unsafe conditions to customer service via radio communication.
• Conducts pre and post-trip inspection on equipment. Conduct basic maintenance including but not limited to washing, cleaning of chute and truck interior to maintain a clean and professional image.
• Trains and/or assists in the training of new employees by relying on previous experience and capability to use the tools and equipment to achieve the objectives for the position as requested by management.
• Responds to customer questions and needs in a polite and courteous manner and assists with any questions or concerns.
• Attends bi-weekly safety meetings and complies with city and state policies and ordinances.
• Will be required to drive a City vehicle for City business use.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Physical Demands & Work Environment

• Physical Effort: Frequent exposure to unpleasant environmental conditions and/or hazards. Majority of work performed outside or with exposure to risk. Exerting up to 35 pounds of force occasionally, up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly having to move objects.
• Work Environment Locations: Never: Office or similar indoor environment. Sometimes: Confined space. Frequently: Construction site. Often: Outdoor environment, street environment (near moving traffic), vehicle.
• Exposures: Frequently: Individuals who are hostile or irate, individuals with known violent backgrounds, extreme cold (below 32 degrees), extreme heat (above 100 degrees), communicable diseases, toxic or caustic chemicals or substances. Often: Moving mechanical parts, fumes or airborne particles, loud noises (85+ decibels such as heavy trucks, jack hammers, construction).
• Travel: Never: Regional travel, national travel, international travel. Often: Local travel.

Minimum Qualifications

• High School Diploma or G.E.D.
• At least two (2) years of truck driving experience.
• Valid Licenses or Certifications: Valid Texas Commercial Drivers License B is required. Valid Texas Commercial Drivers License A is desirable. If applicant holds an out-of-state license, a State of Texas Driver License must be obtained within 6 months of employment.
• As part of the minimum requirements for all positions with the City of Laredo, a thorough background check and certified school transcripts will be required from all applicants who are offered employment.
• Effective February 24, 1997, all selected applicants are required to undergo a drug and alcohol test prior to employment.
• Effective January 7, 2008, all persons in safety-sensitive functions/positions, as per City of Laredo Drug and Alcohol Policy definition, shall be subject to random drug and alcohol testing.
