Operates a rear-loading packer truck for refuse collection on assigned routes, ensuring timely completion and safe transport to the landfill.

Responsibilities

  • Learn and memorize five routes consisting of 1,500 residents.
  • Operate a rear-loading packer truck safely, ensuring the well-being of two refuse collectors riding in the back.
  • Remain vigilant of surroundings, including schools, residents, vehicles, mailboxes, unleashed dogs, overhead power lines, and hazardous scenarios to ensure safe operations.
  • Perform pre-trip and post-trip safety inspections of the assigned truck daily, reporting deficiencies and maintaining basic cleanliness and greasing.
  • Plan routes and instruct refuse collectors on safety procedures.
  • Monitor and address improper performance by collectors to avoid safety risks; report issues to the supervisor immediately.
  • Maintain an updated log of daily responses to 311 customer service complaints, reports, and recycle collections.
  • Safely drive the rear-loader truck in varied weather conditions between the landfill and dumping sites.
  • Attend bi-weekly safety meetings and comply with local and state policies and ordinances.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned, including driving a City vehicle for official business.
  • Address customer concerns in a polite and courteous manner.
  • Assist in supervising assigned refuse collectors.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of hazards and safety rules for operating heavy equipment.
  • Knowledge of hydraulic pistons and compactors to operate tippers for refuse collection.
  • Ability to read and follow route maps.
  • Ability to work safely without posing a threat to self or others.
  • Ability to make independent decisions in line with established policies and procedures.
  • Ability to build and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills in English; oral communication skills in Spanish.
  • Good planning and organizational skills.
  • Ability to follow and give directions, ensuring compliance from assigned staff.
  • Ability to perform strenuous and routine work.
  • Maintain a valid Texas Commercial Driver License (CDL) Class A or B and a satisfactory driving record.
  • Project a positive and professional image of the City of Laredo.
  • Comply with all City of Laredo policies and procedures.
  • Maintain good health and physical condition to perform job duties fully.

Work Environment & Physical Demands

  • Frequent exposure to unpleasant environmental conditions and hazards, including outdoor work, street environments (near moving traffic), and construction sites.
  • Often exposed to extreme heat (above 100°F), moving mechanical parts, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, loud noises (85+ decibels), and occasionally hostile or irate individuals.
  • Physical exertion includes lifting up to 100 pounds occasionally, up to 50 pounds frequently, and up to 20 pounds constantly.
  • Work involves frequent outdoor and warehouse environments, with occasional confined spaces.
  • Local travel is often required; no national or international travel.

Qualifications

  • At least two years of truck driving experience.
  • Valid Texas Commercial Driver License (CDL) Class A or B with a satisfactory Motor Vehicle Record.
  • Out-of-state license holders must obtain a Texas Driver License within 6 months of employment.
  • Must pass a drug and alcohol test prior to employment and be subject to random testing if in a safety-sensitive position.
