About the Role

The Urgent Care or EMS Standby Registered Nurse provides prompt response and treatment for patients with life-threatening, emergent, or urgent medical needs. This role involves monitoring and operating therapeutic equipment to deliver specialized nursing care to acute or complex patients. The nurse collaborates with interdisciplinary teams to develop and implement patient care plans, ensuring coordination across disciplines, physicians, and support staff.

This position requires ongoing assessment, intervention, and advocacy for patients throughout the continuum of care, with reevaluation of patient responses, outcomes, and readiness for discharge. The nurse acts as a role model and mentor to new graduate nurses, orientees, and support staff.

Responsibilities

• Provides patient care, administers medications (including intravenous titrations), manages invasive lines, cardiac monitoring, ventilator management, and performs treatments and procedures in a safe, age-appropriate manner.
• Recognizes changes in patient clinical conditions, takes appropriate action, and documents interventions.
• Responds to Rapid Response Team (RRT), Code Blues, and Code Whites as assigned.
• Collaborates with the healthcare team to intervene and advocate for patients as necessary.
• Intervenes in instances of abuse, assault, neglect, or when financial/social resources are inadequate, making appropriate referrals.
• Develops long- and short-term goals consistent with treatment plans, standards of practice, and patient preferences, discussing the plan of care with the patient.
• Utilizes pain management resources and other interventions to provide pain relief.
• Conducts ongoing assessments and documents the patient’s physical and psychosocial condition, as well as response to care.
• Reviews patient test results, identifies critical results, and communicates them in a timely manner, correlating information into the plan of care.
• Ensures nursing practice is evidence-based, within scope of licensure, and compliant with hospital standards, including core measures, infection control, and HIPAA.
• Collaborates with staff, physicians, and healthcare team members to coordinate care, focusing on efficient emergency/urgent care department throughput.
• Supervises, monitors, and delegates patient care activities to appropriate team members, providing leadership to ensure safe and high-quality care.
• Acts as a resource, providing education about treatment plans, care plans, and medications.
• Develops and implements accurate teaching and ongoing discharge plans.
• Demonstrates empathy, compassion, and culturally appropriate care for patients and their support systems.
• Engages in caring behaviors, taking ownership of interactions with patients, families, physicians, and coworkers.

Requirements

• Active, current, and unencumbered California Registered Nurse (RN) license.
• Graduate of an accredited School of Nursing.
• AHA Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
• Ability to read, write, and communicate effectively in English.
• Ability to work variable shifts, including evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays.
• Ability to maintain flexibility and composure in a constantly changing environment.
• Hospital Fire and Life Safety Card (Los Angeles City Employees only).
• AHA Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification.
• AHA Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification.
• One year of previous urgent care or EMS standby nursing experience or completion of an emergency department training course (including EMTALA and ESI 5-level triage).
• De-escalation certification upon hire; SAMA Certification required upon recertification.

Preferred Qualifications

• Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN).
• Bilingual skills to communicate effectively with patients and families.
• SAMA Certification upon hire.

Pay

Base Rate: $45.47 – $62.42 per hour (8-hour average).

Pay Rate: $53.05 – $72.82 per hour (12-hour rate, calculated as 8 hours at base rate plus 4 hours of overtime). Additional pay information.

Variable shifts, including evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays.
