Oversees clinical functions related to the delivery of patient care, ensuring quality nursing practice and adherence to care standards for the assigned shift. Directs patient care activities by assigning staff and functions based on patient needs and staff competencies, while maintaining clinical nursing expertise. Performs professional nursing duties, including assessment, planning, intervention, and advocacy for patients and their families throughout the care continuum. Ensures break relief and provides coverage as needed, troubleshoots issues, and serves as a clinical resource and role model for staff and patients.

Responsibilities

  • Leadership:
    • Oversees and coordinates daily unit operations, resolving issues using experience and judgment.
    • Demonstrates advanced clinical expertise and collaborative leadership with staff and healthcare team members.
    • Assigns daily tasks based on staff competencies and ensures patient acuities are documented.
    • Provides coaching, training, counseling, discipline, and performance assessments for RNs.
    • Assists with hiring decisions, including interviewing, recommending candidates, and conducting orientation.
  • Professional Clinical Practice:
    • Supervises RNs, LVNs, and CNAs in patient care delivery and provides direct care as needed.
    • Ensures safe, effective, and age-appropriate administration of medications, treatments, and procedures.
    • Recognizes changes in patient conditions and directs appropriate interventions.
    • Ensures compliance with hospital patient care standards and advocates for patients as needed.
    • Intervenes in cases of abuse, neglect, or resource deficiencies and makes appropriate referrals.
  • Plan of Care:
    • Develops long- and short-term goals with treating physicians, incorporating patient preferences.
    • Directs staff in pain management and other interventions to ensure patient comfort.
    • Performs and documents ongoing patient assessments, including physical and psychosocial conditions.
    • Reviews and communicates patient test results, integrating findings into the plan of care.
    • Ensures staff nursing practice is evidence-based, within scope of licensure, and compliant with hospital standards.
    • Enforces infection control and HIPAA compliance among staff.
  • Collaboration:
    • Collaborates with staff, physicians, and healthcare team members to coordinate and manage care.
    • Supervises, monitors, and delegates patient care activities to ensure safe, high-quality care.
    • Serves as an information resource, providing guidance on treatment plans, care plans, and medications.
    • Develops and implements accurate teaching and discharge plans.
  • Communication:
    • Demonstrates empathy, compassion, and culturally appropriate care for patients and their support systems.
    • Engages in caring behaviors and ensures staff does the same, fostering thoughtful interactions with patients, families, and colleagues.

Requirements

  • Active, current, and unencumbered California RN license.
  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing.
  • AHA Basic Life Support certification.
  • Ability to read, write, and communicate effectively in English.
  • Flexibility and composure in a dynamic environment.
  • Understanding of patient classification and staffing requirements.
  • Demonstrated leadership experience.
  • Hospital Fire and Life Safety Card (Los Angeles City Employees only).
  • One year of nursing experience.

Qualifications

  • Preferred:
    • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN).
    • Prior experience as a Charge Nurse in an acute care setting.
    • Bilingual skills for effective communication with patients and families.
    • Recent acute care RN experience.
    • Certification in a specialty area of practice.

Pay

Pay rate ranges from $48.70 to $68.80 per hour.

Benefits

$20,000 Sign-on Bonus for eligible candidates. To qualify, you must have one or more years of acute care RN hospital experience. Current Alta Hospital employees are not eligible, and former employees may also be ineligible. The bonus is available only for full-time RN positions and is paid in increments over 24 months to active employees in good standing.
