About the Role

The Emergency Department Registered Nurse is specially trained to provide prompt response and treatment for patients with life-threatening, emergent, or urgent medical needs. This role involves operating monitoring and therapeutic equipment to deliver specialized nursing care to acute or complex patients. You will collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to develop and implement patient care plans, ensuring coordination across disciplines, physicians, and support staff.

You will perform professional nursing duties, incorporating psychosocial, psychomotor, and age-appropriate cognitive skills to assess, plan, intervene, and advocate for patients throughout their care continuum. The role includes reevaluating patient responses, outcomes, and discharge readiness, revising care plans or making referrals as needed. Additionally, you will act as a role model and mentor to new graduate nurses, orientees, and support staff.

Responsibilities

  • Professional Clinical Practice:
    • Provide patient care, administer medications (including intravenous titrations), manage invasive and arterial lines, cardiac monitoring, ventilator management, and perform treatments/procedures safely and age-appropriately.
    • Recognize changes in patient clinical conditions, take appropriate action, and document interventions.
    • Respond to Rapid Response Team (RRT), Code Blues, and Code Whites as assigned.
    • Collaborate with the healthcare team to intervene and advocate for patients as necessary.
    • Intervene in instances of abuse, assault, or neglect, and make referrals for unresolved patient issues.
  • Plan of Care:
    • Develop long- and short-term goals aligned with treatment plans, standards of practice, and patient preferences.
    • Utilize pain management resources and interventions to provide relief.
    • Conduct ongoing assessments and document patient physical/psychosocial conditions and responses to care.
    • Review and communicate patient test results, identifying critical findings in a timely manner.
    • Ensure nursing practice is evidence-based, compliant with licensure scope, and adheres to hospital standards (e.g., core measures, infection control, HIPAA).
  • Collaboration:
    • Collaborate with staff, physicians, and healthcare teams to coordinate care and improve emergency department throughput.
    • Supervise, monitor, and delegate patient care activities to appropriate team members, ensuring safe and high-quality care.
    • Act as a resource, providing guidance and education about treatment plans, care plans, and medications.
    • Develop and implement accurate teaching and discharge plans.
  • Communication:
    • Demonstrate empathy and compassion, tailoring interactions to the patient’s age, cultural, religious, gender identity, or ethnic background.
    • Engage in caring behaviors, taking ownership of interactions with patients, families, physicians, and coworkers.

Requirements

  • Active, current, and unencumbered California Registered Nurse (RN) license.
  • Graduate of an accredited School of Nursing.
  • AHA Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
  • Ability to read, write, and communicate effectively in English.
  • Ability to work variable shifts, including evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Flexibility and composure in a constantly changing environment.
  • Hospital Fire and Life Safety Card (Los Angeles City Employees only).
  • AHA Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification.
  • AHA Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification.
  • One year of previous emergency nursing experience or completion of an emergency department training course (including EMTALA and ESI 5-level triage within the first six months of employment).
  • De-escalation certification upon hire; SAMA Certification required upon recertification.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN).
  • Bilingual skills for effective communication with patients and families.
  • SAMA Certification upon hire.
  • Certified Emergency Nurse (CEN).

Pay

The average pay rate for this role is $51.20 - $70.40 per hour, calculated based on 12 total hours worked (including overtime). This is not the base rate.

$25,000 Sign-on Bonus: Eligibility requires one or more years of acute care RN hospital experience. Current and some former Alta Hospital employees may not be eligible. The bonus is available for full-time RN positions and is paid in increments over 24 months to active employees in good standing.
