RN Specialty Surgical Care

About the Role

The RN's practice is guided by the ANA Standard for Professional Nurse and Code of Ethics. The RN has knowledge of professional nursing principles, practices, concepts, and procedures as applied to the care of the patient population served. The RN records patients' medical history and symptoms, helps perform diagnostic tests and analyze results, operates medical equipment, administers treatment and medications, and assists with patient follow-up and rehabilitation. The RN establishes or contributes to a care plan, including administering medication, managing IV lines, providing therapies, observing and recording patient progress, and consulting with physicians and other healthcare clinicians. The RN teaches patients and families about managing illnesses or injuries, post-treatment care, diet, nutrition, exercise, and self-administration of medication and therapy. The RN provides direction to licensed practical nurses and nursing aides and delegates tasks appropriately. The RN supports clinical knowledge advancement, precepts new hires and students, and enhances their own expertise in nursing management and patient care.

Responsibilities

• Collect health data systematically, prioritizing based on the patient’s immediate condition, and involving the family in the process.
• Analyze assessment data to determine diagnoses and develop, implement, evaluate, and revise a patient-centered care plan that is family-centered, developmentally and age-appropriate, and culturally relevant.
• Identify expected outcomes individualized to the patient’s specific health problems.
• Develop and implement evidence-based, individualized care plans that ensure continuity of care.
• Initiate treatments, medications, emergency and resuscitative measures based on standing orders, policies, and procedures.
• Provide nursing care to meet the physical, emotional, spiritual, and social-cultural needs of the patient and family using a family-centered approach.
• Evaluate the patient’s progress toward attaining outcomes and document observations, interventions, and monitoring data.
• Continuously evaluate the quality and effectiveness of the care plan to enhance patient outcomes and promote cost-effective, high-quality healthcare.
• Evaluate your own nursing practice in relation to professional standards, statutes, and regulations, maintaining current knowledge in nursing practice.
• Integrate ethical principles into all aspects of practice and enhance cultural and diversity awareness for specific populations.
• Collaborate with peers and other healthcare providers to foster professional development and create an environment for quality practice.
• Collaborate with the multidisciplinary team, patient, and family in assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating patient care.
• Develop and evaluate evidence-based standards of care and identify improvements using research to enhance nursing practice and patient outcomes.
• Participate in and apply evidence-based research to improve nursing practice and patient outcomes.
• Design and apply research to support the integration of evidence into practice.
• Plan and deliver patient care considering safety, effectiveness, and cost, utilizing resources efficiently.

Requirements

• Associate’s or Diploma in Nursing (required).
• All Diploma and ADN hires must complete a BSN within 60 months of hire OR have 5+ years of Registered Nurse experience (including direct or indirect RN roles) at the time of hire.
• Bachelor’s in Nursing (BSN) preferred.
• 1+ year of RN experience in a med-surg or acute specialty setting (required for all Float Positions).
• State and/or Compact State Licensure as a Registered Nurse (RN) in Arizona (required upon hire).
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification (required).
• Unit-specific certification as required by specialty area (required).
• National certification for unit-specific patient population (preferred).
