About the Role
The Nurse Manager serves as a role model, clinical and administrative consultant for Nursing and ancillary staff. Responsible for clinical and administrative decisions in the division in collaboration with or in the absence of the Director. Manages personnel to accomplish designated goals and provide nursing care and services.
Responsibilities
- Manages the provision of adequate and competent staffing.
- Manages the daily schedule efficiently to meet the needs of key customers and stakeholders.
- Evaluates effectiveness of care in producing desired patient outcomes and addresses any issues affecting those outcomes.
- Ensures age and culturally appropriate care is provided.
- Follows Standard Precautions using personal protective equipment as required.
- Assists staff to achieve their potential through innovative management practices.
- Communicates effectively with all members of the Healthcare Team, customers, and key stakeholders.
- Maintains departmental activities within budget and suggests/implements cost-reduction activities.
- Ensures department compliance with Hospital and HCA policies and procedures, including all regulatory requirements.
- Demonstrates clinical competence in the unit nurse role.
- Assumes responsibility for professional growth through participation in professional organizations, seminars, and educational activities.
- Actively participates in Hospital and community activities to promote the nursing role and recruit/maintain staff.
- Collaborates with area colleagues regarding practice issues.
- Participates in Management Development curriculum.
- Develops and consults on department orientation and competency development activities.
- Develops preceptors in each department.
- Reviews, edits, and approves staff payroll.
- Participates in annual competency and evaluation processes.
- Participates in purposeful Employee and Patient Rounding.
- Shares responsibility for department audits and daily Plus Stats.
- Ensures staff are active participants in unit and hospital-wide committees.
- Monitors orientee performance and practice, working with preceptors to initiate corrective or developmental actions.
- Provides staff with ongoing, honest, and constructive feedback regarding performance and growth.
- Provides mentoring, counseling, and coaching for staff as needed.
- Offers opportunities for staff to participate in departmental shared governance.
- Assists staff in providing patient care and services as needed.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- BSN required; Master’s Degree in a related field or actively pursuing an advanced degree preferred.
- Current licensure as a Registered Nurse in the Commonwealth of Virginia or a compact state license.
- BLS, ACLS, PALS certifications required.
- TNCC, CPI certifications preferred.
- Certification in area of specialty or nursing leadership preferred.
- 5+ years of ER experience required.
- 3+ years of ER leadership experience preferred.
