Responsibilities
- Provide supervision of all patient care areas in the hospital, ensuring a working knowledge of hospital and nursing policies and procedures.
- Serve as a managerial and clinical link between the Director of Nursing/Nurse Manager and department direction in their absence.
- Promote the mission, vision, and values of the organization.
- Assume primary leadership accountability and responsibility for milieu management and directing patient care activities of other nursing staff.
- Maintain standards of professional nursing practice in accordance with facility policy, external governing bodies, performance improvement standards, and psychiatric nursing standards.
- Assess patients utilizing the nursing process to formulate individualized plans of care, implement interventions, and evaluate outcomes.
- Interpret age/disability-specific information in response to the client population served.
- Provide for the safe delivery of medication in accordance with policies, procedures, physicians' orders, and current practice.
- Ensure thorough, accurate reporting, and documentation of patients' symptoms, responses, and progress.
- Assume responsibility for professional development, continuing education, and maintaining licensure.
- Assess patient care requirements by making rounds throughout all hospital areas.
- Ensure departmental staffing plans are implemented appropriately.
- Serve as a resource to staff for solving clinical problems and efficiently utilizing staffing/resources.
- Provide immediate follow-up, documentation, and communication of incidents to appropriate managers.
- Respond to emergency situations and assist as necessary.
- Act as a resource for identifying/solving administrative/operational problems.
- Contact representatives of other departments for assistance with problem-solving as needed.
- Interpret and ensure adherence to hospital and nursing philosophy, policies, and procedures.
- Report significant incidents (e.g., patient/family concerns, physician issues, safety matters) to the administrator-on-call or DON/Nurse Manager.
- Provide ongoing feedback (verbal and written) to staff on performance in collaboration with DON/Nurse Manager.
- Assist with nursing personnel performance evaluations by providing necessary information.
- Identify and communicate staff needs for continuing education to the DON/Nurse Manager.
- Provide education, remediation, and assessment of skills competencies as directed.
- Monitor documentation for adherence to rules and regulations.
- Ensure environment of care requirements are met (e.g., quality logs, infection control practices).
- Utilize the nursing process to assess, plan, and formulate interventions for individualized care and treatment modalities.
- Identify expected outcomes, including discharge planning, and evaluate intervention effectiveness.
- Conduct ongoing patient assessments from admission to discharge.
- Initiate medical/psychiatric crisis intervention to stabilize patient conditions.
- Provide individual patient teaching and facilitate family/significant other education.
- Demonstrate knowledge of psychiatric disorders and appropriate nursing interventions.
- Administer medications safely, provide education on prescribed medications, and recognize adverse drug reactions.
- Review, revise, and update medical records within facility guidelines and timeframes.
- Transcribe and implement physicians' orders according to facility policy.
- Document care, progress, and response to interventions accurately and concisely.
- Follow up on client care responsibilities and communicate incomplete assignments or current needs to staff.
- Perform other duties and projects as assigned.
Requirements
- Current RN licensure.
- Prior psychiatric nursing experience required.
- Working knowledge of hospital and nursing policies and procedures.
- Ability to apply independent judgment in interpreting policies and procedures.
- Commitment to professional development, continuing education, and maintaining licensure.
- Adherence to Joint Commission, Federal, and State regulations, as well as organizational policies and performance improvement standards.
