RN Health Facilities Surveyor

Location: Pierre or Rapid City, SD. Pay: $29.08–$34.09 hourly, depending on qualifications. Full-time position with the Department of Health – Division of Licensure and Accreditation.

About the role

This position offers a stable schedule with no rotating shifts, holidays off, and the possibility of a condensed workweek. The Registered Nurse Health Facilities Surveyor protects and promotes the health and safety of residents and patients in South Dakota’s licensed health care facilities by ensuring compliance with state and federal regulations. Travel is required, with a daily per diem and use of a state vehicle provided. Remote work up to 3 days per week (while not on survey) is available after successful completion of a 6-month probationary period.

Responsibilities

• Survey patient activities, dietary services, infection control, resident rights, and physical environment in licensed health care facilities.
• Ensure compliance with state and federal regulations to protect against health and safety hazards.
• Conduct ongoing assessments of care delivery processes to promote change and support desired outcomes.
• Review records, practices, and operations to assess quality of care and ensure appropriate interdisciplinary communication for continuity of care.
• Provide technical assistance and information to develop solutions for healthcare issues.
• Conduct or review psychosocial, physical, and functional nursing assessments to determine plans of action or intervention.
• Revise plans of care or identify corrective measures for compliance or to prevent the spread of disease.
• Provide orientation, mentorship, and preceptorship to junior colleagues, interns, or students.
• Access all occupied areas of health care facilities to conduct inspections and complete the survey process.

Requirements

• Must be a licensed Registered Nurse eligible to practice in South Dakota.
• Training provided through required online Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) courses and precepted surveys in licensed healthcare facilities.
• Ability to travel and stay overnight as required for the position.
• Must report to one of the main office locations (Rapid City, Pierre, Mitchell, or Sioux Falls) for in-office days.
