Health Facility Surveyor - RN

About the role

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) Health Facility Surveyor (HFS) conducts surveys of Medicare/Medicaid certified healthcare facilities for non-long term care provider and supplier types. These surveys are conducted to determine compliance with the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid (CMS) conditions of participation or conditions for coverage. The HFS also conducts surveys to determine compliance with Kansas state statutes and regulations for non-long term care providers and suppliers requiring Kansas licensure.

Responsibilities

• Evaluate compliance with applicable federal regulations and state health codes during the survey process.
• Observe care delivery, review clinical and administrative records, and interview staff, patients, and families.
• Investigate complaints and facility-reported incidents using established protocols.
• Determine non-compliance and document findings (Statement of Deficiencies) with clear, factual supportive evidence using established protocols (CMS Principals of Documentation) and writing guidelines.
• Aid in orientating and training of newly assigned HFSs to perform assigned job duties and responsibilities.
• Provide guidance to facilities on how to interpret and apply regulations (without acting as a consultant).
• Review and evaluate Plans of Corrections.
• May provide testimony and input for the preparation of documents and other materials needed for case hearings and related proceedings.
• May include survey work during off-hours and possibly weekends.

Requirements

• Licensed as a registered nurse and possess experience in a health care facility/service.
• Knowledge of the principals of public health and medical care administration; interviewing techniques, current methods, and practices in health care facilities; health care facility equipment, construction, and safety; federal Medicare and Medicaid requirements.
• Experience as a Health Facility Surveyor with knowledge of State and Federal survey and certification requirements for Acute and Continuing Care and or with Long Term Care provider types.

Qualifications

• Education: High School, GED.
• Licenses & Certifications: Register Nurse - License, certification or registration as an environmental health specialist, dietician, social worker, licensed practical nurse, registered nurse or bachelor’s degree in gerontology, a behavioral health field or a related health field and experience in a health care facility/service.
• Knowledge: Knowledge of the principals of public health and medical care administration; interviewing techniques, current methods, and practices in health care facilities; health care facility equipment, construction, and safety; federal Medicare and Medicaid requirements.
• Experience: Experience as a Health Facility Surveyor with knowledge of State and Federal survey and certification requirements for Acute and Continuing Care and or with Long Term Care provider types.
• Skills: Word, Excel, PowerPoint; proofreading, editing, attention to detail; good oral and written communication skills; report compilation.

Pay

Hourly Pay Range: $33.55 - $35.70

* Salary can vary depending upon education, experience, or qualifications.

Schedule

Monday-Friday, 8am-5pm (Flexible schedules available)
