About the role

This full-time Registered Nurse Health Facilities Surveyor position with the South Dakota Department of Health – Division of Licensure and Accreditation protects and promotes the health and safety of residents and patients in South Dakota’s licensed health care facilities. The role offers the possibility of a condensed workweek, holidays off, and no rotating shifts. Most positions may work remotely up to 3 days per week (while not on survey) after successful completion of a 6-month probationary period. Travel and overnight stays are required; a daily per diem and state vehicle are provided.

Responsibilities

  • Survey patient activities, dietary services, infection control, resident rights, and physical environment to ensure compliance with state and federal regulations.
  • Conduct ongoing assessments of care delivery processes and revise plans of care or identify corrective measures to prevent the spread of disease and ensure compliance.
  • Review records, practices, and operations to assess quality of care and ensure appropriate interdisciplinary communication for continuity of care.
  • Provide technical assistance and information that contributes to the development of broader solutions to healthcare issues.
  • Conduct or review psychosocial, physical, and functional nursing assessments to determine intervention plans.
  • Provide orientation, mentorship, and preceptorship to junior colleagues, interns, and students.
  • Access all occupied areas of health care facilities to complete inspections and surveys.

Requirements

  • Must be a licensed Registered Nurse eligible to practice in South Dakota.
  • Training for the survey process includes required online Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) courses and precepted surveys in licensed healthcare facilities.
  • Ability to travel and conduct overnight stays.
