About the Role

The Head Nurse oversees patient care, staff management, and day-to-day operations of a specific department or nursing unit. They coordinate and provide care using the nursing process to help patients and families attain, maintain, and restore health. The role blends caring, compassion, knowledge, and integrity to deliver safe, quality care while preserving patient autonomy, dignity, and rights. The Head Nurse provides clinical leadership for nursing employees to maintain continuity of care in alignment with hospital and nursing mission, goals, policies, and procedures. They collaborate with managers, directors, and the CNO to ensure goal attainment.

Responsibilities

  • Interpret, review, and combine diagnostic data relevant to the patient’s current condition.
  • Collaborate with nursing leadership and other disciplines to identify opportunities for department improvements and drive change.
  • Intervene and provide guidance during life-threatening situations.
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of interventions and expected outcomes.
  • Implement innovative work processes that improve patient outcomes.
  • Participate in clinical leadership activities such as coaching, counseling, mentoring, hiring, firing, yearly performance evaluations, staffing, payroll, and productivity.
  • Engage in activities designed to improve healthcare delivery.
  • Communicate and collaborate with others in providing patient care.
  • Support life-long learning.
  • Complete other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Minimum of 2 years of experience on the current unit or in a like setting/specialty area.
  • RN licensure.
  • BLS certification within 14 days of hire.
  • Computer literacy.

Preferred: ACLS certification.
