About the Role

NCH is committed to the growth and development of nurses within our health system. This Emergency Nursing Fellowship is open to new graduates and experienced acute-care nurses outside of NCH. The 12–14-week program (start date: October 19, 2026) combines computer modules, simulation, and precepted clinical rotations across our ED campuses. Applications are open now through September 18, 2026.

Fellows must sign a two-year employment commitment to remain in the Emergency Unit in a full-time position after completing the training.

Qualifications

  • BSN preferred
  • Licensed as a Registered Nurse (RN) in the State of Florida
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from the American Red Cross or American Heart Association

Responsibilities

  • Independently plan, implement, and evaluate nursing care using standards of care, policy, and procedure
  • Provide direct nursing care to patients of all ages in emergency and minor-care settings
  • Develop and implement care plans that include strategies to attain expected outcomes
  • Coordinate care delivery and employ patient teaching to promote health and safety
  • Evaluate progress toward outcomes and practice ethically
  • Integrate evidence and research findings into practice
  • Participate in shared decision-making, unit committees, and quality-improvement activities
  • Communicate effectively with patients, families, and the inter-professional team
  • Demonstrate leadership in the professional practice setting
  • Utilize appropriate resources to plan and deliver safe, effective, and financially responsible nursing services
  • Practice in an environmentally safe and healthy manner
  • Use the five-tiered Adult or Pediatric Triage Assessment sheet
  • Interpret cardiac rhythms, pulse oximetry, and hemodynamic measurements
  • Maintain Emergency Department–specific certifications: BLS, ACLS, and PALS (PALS required for Emergency Department assignment)
  • Operate, troubleshoot, and maintain ED-specific equipment safely
  • Participate in the orientation of new nursing personnel; serve as a preceptor
  • Cross-train to all areas of the Emergency Department, including EDX and Minor Adult ED
  • Care for admitted patients and complete inpatient orders for patients awaiting admission
  • Maintain continuum of care by referring patients to the Follow-Up Nurse, Case Manager, or appropriate community agencies
  • Update the patient-tracking system in a timely manner
  • Function in a fast-paced, high-volume environment, making rapid critical decisions
  • Assist peers with assignments, respond to needs in other areas, and rotate schedules flexibly to meet department needs
