About the Role

The Registered Nurse assesses, plans, directs, implements, and assists in providing quality patient care for assigned patients in the Neurovascular PCU. This role operates on a night shift schedule (7:00 PM - 7:00 AM) at John Peter Smith Hospital.

Responsibilities

  • Plan, assess, direct, implement, and provide quality patient care, including modifying nursing care, medication administration, and discharge planning.
  • Provide education tailored to individualized patient needs using the nursing process in coordination with policies and procedures.
  • Monitor changes in patient condition, recording and reporting symptoms, assessing vital signs, and intervening as appropriate.
  • Perform complete data collection from patient presenting complaints and pertinent history.
  • Collaborate with patients to identify treatment plan goals and discharge patients with a written discharge plan.
  • Encourage family participation as appropriate for age and situation.
  • Deliver nursing care, including assessment, education, treatment, pain management, and discharge planning.
  • Document accurately in medical records, forms, and computers, entering orders, patient charges, and other required information.
  • Deliver quality care using multi-disciplinary team strategies while minimizing infection, harm, or injury risks.
  • Maintain accurate reports and records, directing care with regard to age, developmental stage, and presenting complaints.
  • Maintain cooperative working relationships with physicians, departments, staff, patients, and visitors.
  • Anticipate deteriorating life sign patterns or equipment malfunctions and take appropriate action.
  • Modify patient treatment plans based on patient responses and conditions.
  • Collaborate with the patient care team on care plans, using consistent hand-off communication.
  • Conduct and coordinate patient care and transfers in accordance with EMTALA regulations, as applicable.
  • Perform additional department-specific functions as outlined in department procedures.

Requirements

  • Nursing Diploma from an Accredited Diploma Program or Associate or higher Degree in Nursing from an accredited school of professional nursing.
  • Current licensure by the Board of Nurse Examiners for the State of Texas or proof of reciprocity within 90 days.
  • Relevant experience:
    • RN I: 6 months – 1.99 years
    • RN II: 2 – 4.99 years
    • RN III: 5 – 9.99 years
    • RN IV: 10+ years
  • Current JPS-recognized Basic Life Support (BLS) certification, maintained throughout employment.
  • ACLS certification within 3 months of hire.
  • EKG test passed within 90 days.
  • Initial NIHSS certification within 90 days and maintained throughout employment.
  • Completion of unit-specific competency-based orientation program within 90 days.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing from an accredited school of professional nursing.
  • Certification in a nursing specialty area.
