Risk Management Specialist IV
About the role
Risk Management Specialist IV oversees and monitors workers’ compensation claims to ensure accurate and timely reporting. This includes checking the Workers Comp mailbox and online reporting portals for new claims, communicating with employees, supervisors, the CAPPS Service Center, and the State Office of Risk Management to maintain the effectiveness of the workers' compensation process. The position also develops and demonstrates proficiency in using on-line workers’ compensation claims tracking portals such as e-Case and Origami.
Responsibilities
- Oversees and monitors workers’ compensation claims to ensure accurate and timely reporting.
- Communicates with employees, supervisors, the CAPPS Service Center, and the State Office of Risk Management to maintain the effectiveness of the workers' compensation process.
- Develops and demonstrates intimate knowledge and proficiency using on-line workers’ compensation claims tracking portals such as e-Case and Origami (20%).
- Provides guidance to HHS agency management, legal services, human resources, and HHS employees regarding HHS workers’ compensation program for the purpose of maintaining the effectiveness of the workers' compensation process.
- Led or serves on workers' compensation and return-to-work workgroups (20%).
- Analyzes and evaluates HHS System needs to ensure that the HHS Workers’ Compensation and Return-to-Work Programs are designed to meet HHS operational needs by conducting surveys, inspections, or reviews to determine compliance with laws, policies and procedures (20%).
- Ensures that Bona Fide Offers of Employment are filled out accurately and timely for the Return-to-Work Program (15%).
- Acts as liaison and point-of-contact between injured employees, managers, supervisors, the CAPPS Service Center, treating doctors, and the State Office of Risk Management (SORM) (15%).
- Has oversight of administrative reports regarding HHS agencies’ return-to-work outcomes and prepares HHS agencies’ workers’ compensation reports to the State Office of Risk Management; prepares HHS workers’ compensation trend analysis reports; monitors and analyzes reports from the self-service accident/injury reporting system. Analyzes data for claims impact. Uses data to identify trends in the frequency and severity of accidents and injuries. Works closely with risk management and safety staff to identify ways to reduce the frequency and severity of workplace accidents and incidents (10%).
Requirements
The position requires a bachelor's degree in a related field and two or more years of experience managing/coordinating workers' compensation and return-to-work programs. Knowledge of applicable laws, regulations, and policies; including Texas Workers’ Compensation Act, state of Texas leave policies, Americans with Disabilities Act, and Family Medical Leave Act is necessary. Knowledge of workers’ compensation claims filing procedures and deadlines, automated HHS accident reporting systems, return-to-work practices and procedures, statistical analysis processes, techniques, and methodology, program planning and implementation tools and techniques, and computer applications, including Microsoft office suite of applications is also required. Skill in developing training and other presentation materials to a diverse population, gathering, assembling, correlating, and analyzing facts, devising solutions to problems, developing policies and procedures, and communicating effectively, verbally and in writing is needed. A license to adjust workers’ compensation claims in Texas is preferred and must be obtained within six months of employment.
Qualifications
Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with major course work in related field.
