About the role
The Resident Directors (RDs) are integral members of the TJC Residential Life and Housing Department. They are part-time paraprofessional staff members responsible for supervising residence halls or assisting full-time Coordinators.
Primary Responsibilities
- Return to campus before halls open for training each semester and remain after halls close for closing activities.
- Conduct personal and professional life as a role model and 24-hour representative of TJC and the Residential Life and Housing Department.
- Maintain good standing with the College and the Residential Life and Housing Department, adhering to all laws, policies, and guidelines.
- Understand, support, follow, enforce, and educate students and staff about the Residential Hall Handbook, Housing contracts, Student Code of Conduct, and other relevant policies.
- Maintain appropriate student and staff confidentiality at all times.
- Maintain ongoing communication with all Residential Life staff members.
- Display a positive, professional attitude and support towards students, staff, and the Residential Life and Housing Department.
- Handle stressful situations and work under pressure.
- Be able to respond and communicate effectively and immediately to all emergency and/or life-threatening situations.
- Develop a holistic programming/community building program in the hall.
- Supervise the entire operation of the residence hall.
- Directly supervise Resident Assistants (RAs) in their assigned halls and others if needed.
- Be available and accessible for safety, security, emergency, or crisis intervention, and the general operation of the building.
- Accurately maintain hall records – emergency contacts, room inventory sheets.
- Coordinate with appropriate supervisor for empty room cleaning.
- Complete all administrative tasks in an accurate and timely fashion (including RORs, billing, etc.).
- Develop a sense of community within the building and entire residential community through programming and student development.
- Maintain high visibility and availability, including attending community events and interacting with residents.
- Actively and appropriately confront all disciplinary situations and document them as needed or work with RAs to do so in a timely manner.
- Cover office desk shifts and/or serve on departmental committees as directed and needed.
- Participate in training sessions and staff meetings and present topics/training sessions eagerly and enthusiastically.
- Participate in campus-wide RD on-call rotation including during residence hall closings.
- Respond to crises/emergencies in your assigned hall regardless of whether or not you are on-call if you are present in the hall.
- Set goals and objectives for the position and discuss them with your supervisor.
Competencies
- Understanding of and sensitivity to residence hall living and issues which may arise.
- Ability to mediate conflict among residents and RA staff.
- Ability to provide and accept ongoing positive and constructive feedback for job performance improvement.
Qualifications
- Minimum of two semesters of Resident Assistant or related leadership experience.
- Availability for employment for the full term of this appointment (August 3, 2026 – May 14, 2027).
- Understand there is a need for at least one RD staff member to rotate on-call during official College closings to ensure there is appropriate coverage.
