What You Will Do

  • Write, take photos and produce videos on deadline
  • Cover breaking news, public safety, crime, and a variety of community stories
  • Report on weekends and holidays, including police beat coverage
  • Develop enterprise and feature stories that resonate with local audiences
  • Write, photograph, and produce video content on deadline
  • Engage with readers and leverage social media to enhance storytelling and audience reach
  • Build relationships with community leaders, public officials, and local sources

What You Will Bring

  • Bachelor's degree (with comparable experience) in journalism or related field
  • Experience in municipal reporting preferred
  • Proficiency in both photography and video
  • A willingness to experiment with new storytelling tools and social media approaches
  • A mindset to put the reader first

Benefits And Compensation

  • The hourly wage range is $17.55 - $20.59
  • Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to geographic location, education, work experience, time in role, certifications, etc.
  • In addition to your salary, the Company offers eligible employees a variety of benefits including medical, dental, life and disability insurance, 401k, as well as paid time off and select paid holidays (all benefits are based on eligibility).

About the Role

The Daily Freeman, a subsidiary of MediaNews Group, is seeking a passionate and curious Reporter to join our newsroom. This is an opportunity to cover the stories that shape our communities, from breaking news and public safety to local government, human interest features, and the issues that matter most to our readers. We're looking for a journalist who enjoys being out in the community, asking questions, building sources, and finding stories others may miss. The ideal candidate is comfortable working in a fast-paced environment, thrives on deadlines, and understands the importance of delivering accurate, engaging journalism across digital, social, and print platforms.

Qualifications

Must work police shifts weekends and holidays

Conditions Of Employment

  • Travel – This position entails occasional driving for work assignments, training sessions, and/or meetings. The employee will be responsible for transporting themselves between different sites as needed
  • Must be available for shift work. May be required to work various hours for coverage outside of normal business hours
