Reporter

Position Duties

Print Contributor/Reporter/Multimedia Reporter Responsibilities:

• Pitches, accepts as assigned and develops story ideas that have news value for the OSU community.
• Conducts research and necessary interviews to produce full stories with relevant sources of at least 400 words.
• Remains objective and provides fair and accurate coverage.
• Pursues news in a timely fashion.
• Cover breaking news as needed.
• Suggests photo and/or video coverage to enhance story presentation online.
• Shares stories on social media to reach audience.
• Attends all staff and team meetings as required by editor(s)-in-chief.
• Participates in readouts with editors to make any necessary revisions in style or content.
• Able to act as mentors to new hires.

Communication

Responds to emails, messages, team chats and phone calls the same day, professionally representing OMN. Ensures you are using, checking and responding to project management platform (Basecamp, Discord, etc.). Proactively communicates work status with editor(s).

Leadership

Follows all OMN policies and procedures including professionalism and deadlines. Ensures designs and content are centered on equitable representation and inclusion, with attention to impact on historically underrepresented and marginalized communities and constituencies.

• Must be academically enrolled in a high school, community college, or university and pursuing a program or course of study.
• Must meet Academic Standing Requirements; students on academic suspension are not eligible for employment.
• Must meet the applicable minimal enrollment standard.

Required Qualifications

• Is knowledgeable of or willing to learn news gathering and fact checking strategies.
• Willing to learn AP style and work within the SPJ Code of Ethics.
• Able to work flexible hours including nights, weekends and academic breaks.
• Able to meet deadlines.
• Is a strong writer, communicator and comfortable with public speaking.
• Is organized and reliable.
• Experienced with giving and receiving feedback.
• Able to remain professional and calm when working with difficult individuals and situations.

Working Conditions/Schedule

Employment is Sept. 8, 2026 through the academic year. May require standing or sitting for extended periods and occasional lifting. Hours are flexible and may require working nights or weekends depending on events and news.
