About the role
The Rental Service Manager oversees rental service activities across multiple locations, focusing on the installation, servicing, maintenance, and repair of rented, leased, or sold equipment.
Responsibilities
- Establish and maintain service records for all equipment within the rental fleet.
- Set priorities for mechanics and equipment repair to optimize fleet utilization and employee productivity.
- Order and receive spare parts, ensuring adequate inventory levels.
- Allocate parts expense and shop labor through a work order system.
- Review maintenance records to schedule recommended service intervals.
- Train mechanics directly and schedule manufacturer training for skill enhancement.
- Manage a supply of “shop tools” for all service personnel.
- Invoice customers for damages to rental equipment after approval from the Rental Manager.
- Identify potential outsourcing options for repairing rental equipment.
- Handle customer service calls for equipment failures, taking prompt action.
- Decide whether to repair or replace rental equipment on-site, consulting with the Rental Manager.
- Engage in customer training regarding daily maintenance and safe operation of equipment.
- Notify the Rental Application Specialist before billing for damages.
- Establish and maintain maintenance and repair standards for each piece of rental equipment.
- Directly supervise up to 15 employees.
Requirements
- Four-year degree in a related field from an accredited college or university, or 5-10 years of related experience and/or training, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Specific brand training on fleet equipment.
- Five years of experience with Caterpillar product lines.
- Ability to teach other mechanics how to maintain and repair equipment.
- Strong administrative and relationship skills to manage repair tasks efficiently.
- Technical background in a related field.
- Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.
- Effective communication and problem-solving skills.
- Valid Driver’s License and clean driving record.
- Professionalism and diplomacy to handle emotional or ambiguous situations.
- Ability to lift and move up to 50 lbs.
- Availability to work normal shifts, with flexibility for weekends, holidays, and evenings as needed.
- Knowledge of CAT DBS Database software, internet software, order processing systems, MS Excel, and MS Office Suite.
- High tolerance for complex job tasks with frequent interruptions.
