Release of Information Specialist
Job Summary
Receive, evaluate, and coordinate release of information requests from all requestors submitted by mail, fax, phone, and/or in-person. Complete release of information requests including retrieving patient’s medical charts and returning charts, copying and/or scanning medical records accurately and correctly, and preparing documentation for delivery either electronically or by mail. Review the accuracy of scanned documents. Perform quality checks on work to assure accuracy of the release, confidentiality, and proper invoicing. Must have basic understanding of release of information workflows to ensure accurate and appropriate assignment of requests. Scan, copies, and distribute appropriate records and documents in a timely manner. Notifies supervisor of any record issues that may arise. Refer appropriate requests to internal and/or external review staff as needed. Maintain a record of all requests for information using the EPIC system. Complete cash handling tasks as assigned, which may include collecting credit card information, handling checks received by mail and posting payments. Accurately and efficiently utilize a computer for data input and retrieval of data. Receives, sorts, and distributes incoming mail for department. May perform other duties as assigned to support business needs.
Qualifications
- Must have an Associates degree in Health Information Management or Medical Record Technology/Medical Secretary.
- Prior release of information experience, at least 1 year, in a health related facility is preferred.
- The incumbent must have the ability to interpret and analyze data/documentation; be able to work well with detail; have good organizational skills; be able to prioritize work; have good oral and written communication skills; and have good problem solving skills.
- The incumbent must have a good working knowledge of medical terminology, health information practices and procedures.
- The incumbent must have good computer skills and knowledge of information systems.
