Registered Nurse (RN) - Pediatric Emergency Department - Rotating

About the Role

This position integrates technical skills and theoretical knowledge to meet the needs of patients and families. The role assists the healthcare team with the prevention of illness and injury, maintenance of wellness, and provision of comfort. It provides direction, education, and leadership at the unit level, delivering and documenting direct, age-specific care based on medical orders and an integrated, multidisciplinary plan of care. The role also safely administers prescribed medications, identifying incompatibilities and/or interactions.

Responsibilities

• Assist the healthcare team in preventing illness and injury, maintaining wellness, and providing comfort.
• Provide direction, education, and leadership at the unit level.
• Deliver and accurately document direct, age-specific care to patients based on medical orders and an integrated, multidisciplinary plan of care.
• Safely administer prescribed medications, identifying incompatibilities and/or interactions.
• Organize work and delegate/supervise others (RNs, LPNs, Care Partners, Unit Secretaries, etc.) in carrying out assignments.
• Follow documented physician/licensed independent provider orders and practice within the boundaries of nursing regulations in Virginia.
• Practice guided by the ANA Code of Ethics for Nursing and established national nursing practice standards.

Requirements

Licensure, Certification, or Registration

• Current RN licensure in Virginia, or eligibility for licensure in Virginia or a compact state.
• AHA BLS HCP Certification or equivalent (required for continued employment).

Education and Training

• Diploma or Associate’s Degree from a professional nursing program recognized by the Virginia Board of Nursing.
• All registered nurses without a Bachelor’s degree in Nursing (or higher) must enroll in an approved RN to BSN program within two years of their start date and complete it within five years unless grandfathered under previous requirements.

Experience

• Clinical Nurse I: No prior RN experience required. Preferred: Experience as an LPN, nursing assistant, or care partner in an acute care setting or as applicable to the area of practice.
• Clinical Nurse II: 12 to 24 months of RN experience required. Preferred: Academic healthcare experience or experience with a similar patient population in an acute care setting.
• Clinical Nurse III: 3 years of clinical experience required. Preferred: Academic healthcare experience, experience with a similar patient population in an acute care setting, and certification in a specialty area.

Additional Information

• Clinicians work all three shifts, weekends, and holidays. Shift rotations and schedules will be established with the Nurse Manager/Practice Manager and may be adjusted as necessary.
• Age-specific groups served will vary based on unit assignment.

Physical Requirements

• Physical: Lifting 20-50 lbs; exposure to potentially hazardous and infectious substances.
• Activities: Prolonged standing, prolonged sitting, frequent bending, walking (distance), climbing (steps, ladder, other), reaching (overhead, extensive, repetitive).
• Mental/Sensory: Strong recall, reasoning, problem-solving, hearing, speaking clearly, writing legibly, reading, logical thinking.
• Emotional: Fast-paced environment, steady pace, ability to handle multiple priorities, frequent and intense customer interactions, noisy environment.
