About the Role

The Critical Care Float Pool RN provides specialized care across Bronson's critical care service lines, floating as needed to the Medical Intensive Care Unit (MICU), Trauma/Surgical Intensive Care Unit (TCU/SICU/Burn), Neuro Critical Care Unit (NCCU), and Cardiac Surgical Unit (CSU). This role offers the opportunity to care for a diverse, high-acuity patient population while working alongside multidisciplinary critical care teams throughout the hospital.

Under general supervision and in accordance with organizational policies, procedures, and guidelines, the registered nurse manages care delivery for patients throughout their length of stay to achieve quality outcomes and timely discharge by:

• Utilizing the nursing process of assessment, planning, diagnosing, implementation, and evaluation
• Coordinating care provided by other professionals
• Delegating selected acts, tasks, or functions within the scope of professional nursing practice
• Providing selected aspects of physical care as appropriate given the patient's acuity and complexity
• Documenting and communicating patient responses, resource consumption, and anticipated needs during each tour of duty

Employees providing direct patient care must demonstrate competencies specific to the population served.

Requirements

• Associate's degree in Nursing required
• Bachelor's degree in Nursing preferred; must obtain within 8 years of hire (employment will be terminated if not met)
• Licensed Registered Nurse in good standing for the state of Michigan
• BLS certification required by completion of core orientation
• Critical care or Advanced Life Support (ALS) certifications may be required, unit-specific
• Current driver's license in the state of Michigan and proof of insurance required for BAH
• Ability to read, interpret, and analyze data from various computer systems and equipment
• Constant verbal, written, and electronic communication skills
• Ability to handle high levels of mental/visual fatigue, including sustained concentration on detailed work and computer/CRT use for 40-70% of the time
• Regularly lifts up to 50 pounds and occasionally assists with heavier tasks

Unit-Specific Certifications

• Bronson South Haven Emergency Department: SALT triage, ESI Triage, and NIH Stroke Scale within 90 days of hire; ACLS, PALS, and TNCC (for FT/PT nurses) within 6 months
• Special Care Unit: PALS certification within 6 months of hire
• Labor & Delivery, Mother/Baby/Antepartum (BMH & BBC): Electronic Fetal Monitoring Certification (PQF or NCC) within 6 months of completing intermediate fetal monitoring

Scrub RN Responsibilities

• Interprets procedure cards and assesses case carts for supplies prior to procedures
• Identifies missing equipment/supplies and arranges acquisition
• Anticipates physician needs based on operative procedures and preferences
• Monitors patient condition for overt changes and problems
• Evaluates and updates case information (e.g., preference cards, equipment status)
• Ensures proper use of equipment/instruments and discourages improper handling
• Anticipates changing needs of the operative field and surgical team
• Acts as a specialist/resource for circulators unfamiliar with positioning devices or specialty equipment
• Performs after-hour call duties on a rotational basis
• Performs scrub duties in multiple services (e.g., neuro and ortho STII for spinal fusions)

Additional Responsibilities by Location

• HDU Department: Additional on-call requirements beyond regular scheduled hours
• Bronson Lakeview Hospital and Bronson South Haven Hospital:
  • Completes annual Workday CBL – "Swing Beds" (covers documentation and care differences for swing bed patients)
  • May be expected to cover shifts at Bronson Lakeview or South Haven based on acuity and staffing needs
