Registered Nurse ( RN ) - Bronson Battle Creek Birthplace - OB / Labor Delivery / Mother Baby

About the Role

Join Team Bronson at the Bronson Birthplace in Battle Creek, a 15-bed unit providing comprehensive care for pregnant, laboring, and postpartum patients, as well as healthy newborns. The unit includes 11 LDRP (Labor/Delivery/Recovery/Postpartum) beds, 4 antepartum/post-op beds, 2 operating rooms, 3 triage bays, and a newborn nursery. Registered Nurses (RNs) in this unit undergo cross-training in labor and delivery (including operating room procedures), postpartum care, and nursery care.

Under general supervision, the RN manages patient care delivery throughout the length of stay, utilizing the nursing process of assessment, planning, diagnosing, implementation, and evaluation. Responsibilities include coordinating care with other professionals, delegating tasks, providing physical care, and documenting patient responses and needs.

Responsibilities

• Manage patient care delivery using the nursing process: assessment, planning, diagnosing, implementation, and evaluation.
• Coordinate care provided by other healthcare professionals.
• Delegate tasks to patient care assistants and universal service assistants within the scope of professional nursing practice.
• Provide physical care appropriate to the patient’s acuity and complexity.
• Document and communicate patient responses to care, resource consumption, and anticipated needs during each shift.
• Demonstrate competencies specific to the patient population served.
• Adhere to the Standards of Practice and Standards of Professional Performance as outlined:
  • Collect and analyze comprehensive patient data, including physical and developmental needs.
  • Identify and document patient problems, expected outcomes, and individualized care plans.
  • Implement and evaluate the effectiveness of interventions, including medication administration and patient education.
  • Participate in quality improvement activities and apply research findings to practice.
  • Collaborate with patients, families, and interdisciplinary teams to achieve positive outcomes.
  • Integrate ethical considerations, safety, and cost-effectiveness into care delivery.
  • Provide leadership in professional practice settings, including participation in nursing councils and committees.
• For Scrub RN responsibilities:
  • Interpret procedure cards and prepare case carts with necessary supplies.
  • Anticipate physician needs during operative procedures.
  • Monitor patient condition and update case information as needed.
  • Serve as a resource for circulators and perform scrub duties across multiple services (e.g., neuro and ortho).
  • Participate in after-hour call rotations.
• For HDU Department: Additional on-call requirements beyond regular scheduled hours.
• For Bronson Lakeview Hospital and Bronson South Haven Hospital:
  • Complete the annual Workday CBL – "Swing Beds" to understand documentation and care differences for swing bed patients.
  • Cover shifts at Bronson Lakeview Hospital and/or Bronson South Haven Hospital as needed for approved employees in Swing Bed Facilities.

Requirements

• Associate’s degree in Nursing (required).
• Bachelor’s degree in Nursing (preferred); must be obtained within 8 years of hire if not already held.
• Active and unrestricted Registered Nurse license in the state of Michigan.
• BLS certification (required by completion of core orientation).
• Additional certifications may be required based on unit specifics:
  • Critical care or Advanced Life Support (ALS).
  • Electronic Fetal Monitoring Certification (through PQF or NCC) within 6 months for RNs in Labor & Delivery and Mother/Baby/Antepartum.
  • For Bronson South Haven Emergency Department: SALT triage, ESI Triage, and NIH Stroke Scale within 90 days; ACLS, PALS, and TNCC within 6 months.
  • For Bronson South Haven Special Care Unit: PALS certification within 6 months.
• Current Michigan driver’s license and proof of insurance (required for BAH).
• Ability to read, interpret, and analyze data from computer systems and equipment.
• Strong verbal, written, and electronic communication skills.
• Ability to handle high levels of mental and visual fatigue, including sustained attention to detail and computer/CRT use for 40-70% of the time.
• Physical ability to regularly lift up to 50 pounds and occasionally assist with heavier tasks.
