Registered Nurse ( RN ) - OB Labor Delivery Unit - Bronson Methodist Hospital

About the Role

As a Registered Nurse (RN) in the OB Labor Delivery Unit at Bronson Methodist Hospital, you will care for both low-risk and high-risk pregnant individuals during labor, childbirth, and the immediate postpartum period on a 23-bed unit equipped with a triage area, operating rooms, and recovery rooms (PACU).

Under general supervision and in accordance with organizational policies, procedures, and the Michigan Public Health Code, you will manage patient care delivery throughout their stay to achieve quality outcomes and timely discharge by:

• Utilizing the nursing process: assessment, planning, diagnosing, implementation, and evaluation
• Coordinating care provided by other professionals
• Delegating tasks within the scope of professional nursing practice
• Providing physical care appropriate to the patient’s acuity and complexity
• Documenting and communicating patient responses, resource consumption, and anticipated needs

Employees providing direct patient care must demonstrate competencies specific to the population served.

Requirements

• Associate's degree in Nursing (required)
• Bachelor's degree in Nursing (preferred; must obtain within 8 years of hire if not already held)
• Active Michigan Registered Nurse license in good standing
• BLS certification (required by completion of core orientation)
• Additional certifications may be required based on unit (e.g., Critical Care, ALS, Electronic Fetal Monitoring for Labor & Delivery)
• Current Michigan driver’s license and proof of insurance (for BAH)

Responsibilities

Standards of Practice

• Collect and document comprehensive patient data, including nursing history, physical/emotional needs, and vital signs
• Analyze assessment data to identify patient problems and confirm with patient/family as appropriate
• Develop individualized care plans with expected outcomes, incorporating patient/family input and clinical pathways
• Implement interventions, administer medications, and provide patient education
• Evaluate progress toward outcomes and document patient responses

Standards of Professional Performance

Scrub RN Responsibilities

• Interpret procedure cards and prepare case carts, ensuring all supplies are available
• Anticipate physician needs based on operative procedures and preferences
• Monitor patient condition and respond to overt changes
• Update case information, including preference cards and equipment needs
• Serve as a resource for circulators on positioning, specialty equipment, and implants
• Participate in after-hour call rotations
• Perform scrub duties across multiple services (e.g., neuro, ortho, spinal fusions)

Additional Responsibilities by Location

• HDU Department: Additional on-call requirements beyond regular scheduled hours
• Bronson Lakeview and South Haven Hospitals:
  • Complete the annual Workday CBL on "Swing Beds" to understand documentation and care differences for swing bed patients
  • Cover shifts at Bronson Lakeview or South Haven Hospitals as needed based on patient acuity and staffing
• Virtual Registered Nurse (VRN) Role: Leverage technology to deliver remote patient care in collaboration with bedside staff

Skills

• Ability to read, interpret, and analyze data from computer systems and medical equipment
• Strong verbal, written, and electronic communication skills
• Ability to sustain concentration for extended periods (e.g., detailed work, computer/CRT use 40–70% of the time)
• Physical ability to lift up to 50 pounds and assist with heavier tasks

Unit-Specific Certifications (as applicable)

• Electronic Fetal Monitoring Certification (required within 6 months for Labor & Delivery RNs)
• Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)
• Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS)
• Trauma Nursing Core Course (TNCC)
• SALT triage, ESI Triage, and NIH Stroke Scale (for Emergency Department RNs)
