About the Role
The registered nurse manages the care delivery for patients throughout the length of stay to achieve quality outcomes and timely discharge by:
- Utilizing the nursing process of assessment, planning, diagnosing, implementation, and evaluation
- Coordinating the care provided by other professionals
- Delegating selected acts, tasks, or functions within the scope of professional nursing practice
- Providing selected aspects of physical care appropriate to the patient's acuity and complexity
- Documenting and communicating the patient's response to care, resource consumption, and anticipated needs
Employees providing direct patient care must demonstrate competencies specific to the population served.
Requirements
- Associate's degree in Nursing required
- Bachelor's degree in Nursing preferred; must obtain within 8 years of hire (employment will be terminated if not met)
- Licensed Registered Nurse in good standing for the state of Michigan
- BLS certification required by completion of core orientation
- Critical care or ALS certifications may be required for some units
- Current driver's license in the state of Michigan and proof of insurance required for BAH
- Ability to read, interpret, and analyze data from various computer systems
- Constant verbal, written, and electronic communication skills

Unit-Specific Responsibilities
Scrub RN
- Interprets procedure cards and assesses case carts for supplies
- Identifies missing equipment/supplies and arranges acquisition
- Anticipates physician needs based on operative procedure knowledge
- Observes and evaluates changes in patient condition
- Updates case information (e.g., preference cards, equipment issues)
- Ensures proper use of equipment and instruments
- Anticipates needs of the surgical team and operative field
- Acts as a resource for circulators on positioning and specialty equipment
- Performs after-hour call duties on a rotational basis
- Performs scrub duties across multiple services (e.g., neuro, ortho)
HDU Department
- Additional on-call requirements beyond regular scheduled hours
Bronson Lakeview and South Haven Hospitals
- Completes annual Workday CBL – "Swing beds" to understand documentation and care differences for swing bed patients
- May be expected to cover shifts at Bronson Lakeview or South Haven based on patient acuity and staffing needs
Virtual Registered Nurse (VRN)
- Leverages technology to deliver patient care remotely
- Collaborates with bedside staff for quality outcomes and timely discharge
- Conducts admission screening, patient/family education, discharge planning, and medication dual acknowledgments
Physical Demands
- Work produces high levels of mental/visual fatigue (e.g., repetitive or detailed tasks requiring sustained concentration)
- Regularly lifts bulky or moderately heavy weights (up to 50 pounds)
- Occasionally assists with heavier tasks or equivalent effort
- Operates and focuses on a personal computer or CRT for 40-70% of the time
Certifications
- Bronson South Haven Specific:
- All new hires must obtain BSN within 8 years of hire date
- Emergency Department:
- SALT triage, ESI Triage, and NIH Stroke Scale within 90 days of hire
- ACLS, PALS, and TNCC (for FT/PT nurses) within 6 months of hire
- Special Care Unit:
- PALS certification within 6 months of hire
- Labor & Delivery, Mother/Baby/Antepartum (BMH & BBC):
- Electronic Fetal Monitoring Certification (PQF or NCC) within 6 months of completing intermediate fetal monitoring
