We are seeking a Med/Surg Observation Registered Nurse to provide high-quality, patient-centered care in a fast-paced environment focused on short-stay evaluation and acute medical needs.

About the role

The RN independently assesses, plans, delegates, coordinates, implements, and evaluates nursing care for a group of patients, serving as a primary or accountable nurse based on unit needs and patient acuity. This role includes educating patients and families, safely administering medications in accordance with United Health Services policy, and supporting efficient use of staffing, time, and resources to ensure excellent clinical and operational outcomes.

The Observation RN upholds all nursing practice standards, regulatory requirements, and UHS policies while actively participating in shared governance, quality improvement, and evidence-based practice initiatives. This position is on the night shift and involves ongoing professional development, supporting new staff and students, and contributing to a culture of safety, teamwork, and continuous improvement.

Responsibilities

  • Assesses, plans, delegates, coordinates, implements, and evaluates nursing care in managing a group of patients, serving as a primary nurse and/or accountable nurse, when designated by unit assignment and consideration of factors related to safety, effectiveness, competency, cost, and impact.
  • Educates patient and family in health promotion and disease management using available resources.
  • Utilizes a working knowledge of pharmacology and safely administers medications according to United Health Services policy.
  • Shares in responsibility for productivity and effective resource utilization including staffing, time management, supplies, and services.
  • Complies with all nursing practice standards, regulatory requirements, and United Health Services policies.
  • Actively participates in and supports the Nursing Shared Governance Model by supporting the Unit Council, participating in improvement initiatives, and contributing to peer review practices.
  • Actively engages in professional development, continuing nursing education, and completes all mandatory education requirements.
  • Integrates nursing research and current evidence into practice.
  • Provides a supportive learning environment for new employees and students.
  • Follows all United Health Services Values.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Graduate of an accredited school of Nursing.
  • Current NYS RN License.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing (preferred).
  • Previous clinical nursing experience in an acute care or ambulatory setting (preferred).
  • Professional certification in a related nursing specialty (preferred).
  • Relevant skills certification (i.e., ACLS, PALS, TNCC) as required by home unit assigned (preferred).

Schedule

Night rotational shift, 24 scheduled weekly hours.

Pay

Compensation range: $40.70 - $61.05 per hour, depending on experience. Up to a $25,000 sign-on bonus for candidates who meet eligibility criteria.
