Job Summary

The Certified Lactation Consultant facilitates current, consistent, and precise instruction for all lactating mothers in the Maternal Child areas which include: Labor and Delivery and Mother Baby. The Certified Lactation Consultant functions, in coordination with the hospital’s policies and procedures, as a member of the multidisciplinary healthcare team as a consultant, educator, and mentor to healthcare professionals and patients. This position provides support for quality improvement in the area of lactation coordination.

Qualifications

  • Required Licenses/Certifications:
    • Texas or Compact State Nursing License – RN required
    • BCLS Certification
    • NRP Certification (Chapters 1-9) within 3 months of hire or immediately with Newborn, Labor and Delivery/Antepartum experience
  • Required Education/Experience:
    • Graduate from an Accredited Associate Degree or Baccalaureate Degree of Nursing Program
    • Effective oral and written communication skills
    • Ability to work within a team to ensure quality care
    • Strong interpersonal and problem-solving skills
    • Strong critical thinking and communication skills and ability to prioritize needs continuously
    • Ability to lead a team and function as a team member
    • Excellent customer service skills, follow AIDET philosophy
    • Computer literate in charting and order entry
    • Demonstrate a broad knowledge of all aspects of breastfeeding including the psychosocial
    • Experience in maternal/child nursing, early childhood development, prenatal education, breastfeeding support, and nutrition
    • Experience teaching staff through educational inservices or seminars
  • PREFERRED:
    • Healthcare experience
    • Neonatal experience
    • S.T.A.B.L.E. course certification
    • Certified Breastfeeding Educator certification (IBCLC)
