Provides leadership and clinical expertise during shifts within the department. Manages unit resources and supervises personnel to ensure appropriate staffing levels based on patient needs, both clinically and financially. Serves as clinical support for staff and exemplifies competency and professionalism.

About the role

As part of line management, this role includes significant leadership responsibilities such as leading change, scheduling, maintaining staff competencies, new employee selection and orientation, constructive discipline, and completing annual employee performance reviews. Provides leadership support for professional governance while also working a regularly scheduled bedside RN shift with accountability for assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating patient care. Utilizes the nursing process with technology, therapeutic intervention, evidence-based practice, and coordination of care with other health team members.

Responsibilities

  • Conducts thorough evaluations of physical, social, and psychological status, including cognitive, communication, and developmental skills when necessary.
  • Gathers and assesses information from the interdisciplinary team: patient, family, physician, non-nursing professionals, support staff, and others.
  • Models and fosters an environment of professionalism and employee engagement on the unit.
  • Advocates for nursing teams in respective practice areas and supports other members of nursing management with key messaging and priority initiatives.
  • Demonstrates the ability to set priorities and coordinate the department’s patient care delivery through effective time, supplies, and resource management, including scheduling caregivers and approving/denying time off requests based on department and patient care needs.
  • Forecasts, develops, and communicates accurate information on admission, discharge, and transfer to ensure appropriate patient placement while collaborating with caregivers on challenging patients.
  • Evaluates and promotes staff competency, performance, and compliance with policies and procedures through performance reviews, peer reviews, caregiver recognition, and corrective action.
  • Develops and implements plans to move staff from novice to expert nurses in areas of practice, clinical competency, and patient experience.
  • Integrates legal and ethical standards into practice, complies with regulatory standards, practices within scope of licensure, provides accurate and timely documentation, and understands legal implications of care delivery.
  • Makes and/or recommends decisions related to staffing and hiring needs, candidate evaluation and selection, new hire orientation, and caregiver retention.
  • Ensures that staffing levels and skill levels match census and acuities for the department and assigns patient care responsibilities appropriate to individual caregivers' skill and experience levels.
  • Assists staff members with direct patient care as needed.
  • Shares responsibility for day-to-day operations, promoting safety, quality, and experience for patients and caregivers.
  • Oversees competency of staff, including annual skills updates, ongoing educational in-services, and completion of mandatory educational requirements.
  • Oversees ongoing programs such as patient experience and continuous improvement.

Requirements

  • Current Nursing License to practice as a Registered Nurse in the state of practice. Valid compact licenses must be transferred to the state of practice within 60 days of the start of employment.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification for Healthcare Providers.
  • Bachelor’s degree in nursing (BSN) from an accredited institution (degree will be verified). Registered Nurses (RNs) hired or promoted into this role must obtain their Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) within four years of their hire or promotion date. If there is an existing education agreement, that agreement will take precedence.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Demonstrated leadership and mentoring experience in assigned clinical area.
  • Specialty Certification.

Physical Requirements

  • Ongoing need to see and read information, labels, assess patient needs, operate monitors, and identify equipment and supplies.
  • Frequent interactions requiring verbal communication as well as hearing and understanding spoken information, alarms, needs, and issues quickly and accurately, particularly during emergency situations.
  • Manual dexterity of hands and fingers to manipulate complex and delicate equipment with precision and accuracy, including frequent computer use and typing for documenting patient care, accessing information, and medication preparation.
  • Expected to lift and utilize full range of movement to transfer patients, including bending to retrieve, lift, and carry supplies and equipment, often of varying weights up to and including heavy items.
  • Need to walk and assist with transporting/ambulating patients and obtaining and distributing supplies and equipment, including pushing/pulling gurneys and portable equipment, often in crowded and busy rooms.
  • May be expected to stand in a stationary position for extended periods.
  • For roles requiring driving: Expected to drive a vehicle, which requires sitting, seeing, and reading signs, traffic signals, and other vehicles.

Schedule

  • Variable days, Monday through Friday
  • Preferred schedule: 4 x 10-hour shifts, but can work 3 x 12-hour shifts
  • Shift times: 6:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. or 6:30 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.
  • 1 night of call per week
  • 1 weekend of call every 8 weeks

Pay

The hourly range for this position is $45.31 - $67.01. Actual hourly rate dependent upon experience.
