Duties and Responsibilities
- Exercises independent judgment and leadership on daily operations of the unit and advises the Nurse Manager.
- Serves as a clinical, educational and supervisory resource to the nursing staff.
- Manages the appropriate utilization of unit resources (i.e. supplies and labor).
- Performs direct nursing care for assigned patients when indicated (see Job Description for Staff Nurse).
- Conducts nursing and patient rounds on the unit several times a day.
- Confers with physicians, as needed, to clarify medical orders and direct care.
- Serves as a liaison with staff in nursing, medical staff, social work, therapy, nutritional services, pharmacy, etc. to coordinate care.
- Foster an environment of cultural excellence in order to maintain patient satisfaction.
Quality Assessment and Quality Improvement
- Makes ongoing assessment of staff performance and providing individual/team feedback.
- Prepares staff performance evaluations in collaboration with the Nurse Manager.
- Participates in hospital/unit committee/council activities.
- Ensures professional development of self through participation in seminars, certifications, professional affiliations and educational programs to keep abreast of latest trends in their area of expertise.
- Independently or in collaborations with the Nurse Educator, collects, complies, and reviews staff development activities for each employee. Completes individual follow-up to ensure that the employee meets requirement in the areas of age specific and unit-based competencies.
Additional Duties and Responsibilities
- Adheres to downtime procedures.
- Adheres to established departmental policies, procedures, and objectives.
- Performs both essential and non-essential job functions in a safe manner as identified by IHMC.
- Demonstrates an understanding of and models the mission and core values of IHMC through behavior and attitude.
- Enhances professional growth and development by accessing educational programs, job related literature, in-service meetings, and workshops/seminars.
- Functions as interim Nurse Manager as needed.
- Provides direct patient care on the unit as needed.
