About the role
The Roadway Worker in Charge (RWIC) position at RailPros is responsible for providing on-site protection for activities on and around live railroad tracks. Key responsibilities include radio communication with train dispatchers and engineers, ensuring work groups are clear of limits during train movements, handling and placing signs and equipment, and maintaining a safe and respectful workplace culture.
Responsibilities
- Provide required jobsite protection on each assignment, error-free and consistent with the rules
- Communicate with train dispatchers and engineers via radio
- Ensure work groups are clear of limits during train movements
- Grant permission for trains and on-track equipment to proceed through limits
- Prepare and submit required electronic forms including job setup forms, daily work reports, invoices, and other reports
- Handle and place signs, derail and other tools and equipment weighing 15 to 90 pounds
- Maintain a high level of communication with RWIC supervisors and managers regarding assignments and schedules
- Participate in routine safety classes and qualification training
- Contribute to a positive, inclusive, and respectful workplace culture
- Uphold the organization's standards of integrity, accountability, and respect
- Adhere to all company policies, procedures, and applicable laws and regulations
- Other duties as assigned or required to meet business needs

- Able to effectively warn roadway workers of approaching trains
- Understand on-track safety training and qualifications
- Proficient in radio procedures for communication
- Proficient in performing job briefings
- Able to place railroad advance warning and stop signs
- Able to install railroad derails and apply locking devices
- Proficient in electronic communications and standard office applications
Qualifications
- A high school diploma or equivalent (GED)
- At least 20 years of experience as a supervisor track inspection (STI), assistant track supervisor (ATS), Foreman, or higher, OR 20 years of experience as a RWIC while employed by a Class I or Class II freight railroad
