About the role
The Roadway Worker in Charge (RWIC) position at RailPros is responsible for providing on-site protection for activities on and around live railroad tracks. Key responsibilities include radio communication with train dispatchers and engineers, ensuring work groups are clear of limits during train movements, and handling and placing signs and equipment.
Responsibilities
- Provide required jobsite protection on each assignment, error-free and consistent with the rules.
- Error-free and consistent with the rules.
- Grant permission for trains and on-track equipment to proceed through limits.
- Perform daily job briefings with all personnel on the job site and ensure adherence to safety requirements.
- Handle and place signs, derail and other tools and equipment weighing 15 to 90 pounds, as necessary.
- Maintain a high level of communication with RWIC supervisors and managers regarding assignments and schedules.
- Participate in routine safety classes and qualification training.
- Contribute to a positive, inclusive, and respectful workplace culture.

- Adhere to all company policies, procedures, and applicable laws and regulations.
- Other duties as assigned or required to meet business needs.
Requirements
- Able to complete required physical demands and tasks.
- Able to effectively warn roadway workers of the approach of trains.
- Understand the on-track safety training and qualification required of roadway workers to be protected.
- Proficient in radio procedures for communicating between RWIC/EICs (Employee in Charge) and assigned work groups.
- Proficient in performing a job briefing with all roadway workers within their work location.
- Able to place railroad advance warning and stop signs.
- Able to install a railroad derail and apply locking devices.
- Proficient with electronic communications including email and text, as well as standard office applications (i.e., Microsoft Office Suite).
Qualifications
- A high school diploma or equivalent (GED).
- 20 years of experience with the last position held as a supervisor track inspection (STI), assistant track supervisor (ATS), Foreman, or higher, OR 20 years of experience as a RWIC while employed by a Class I or Class II freight railroad.
