Railcar Repairman (Carman) – Haslet, TX

Management has the discretion to change or modify the duties and essential functions at any time in accordance with operating needs. Frequency of essential functions, tools used, physical requirements, and working conditions may vary based on railcar type, weather, and location, but all Maintenance Specialists perform similar core work.

Responsibilities

• Repair, modify, and upgrade railcars.
• Rebuild car components such as bolsters, side framers, hitch heads, and box car doors.
• Weld (30% of time), fabricate, and use a cutting torch.
• Perform mechanical labor (95% of time).
• Repair and maintain railcars according to blueprints and specifications using hand tools, power tools, and precision measuring instruments.
• Inspect machines and equipment to diagnose issues using visual, tactile, and specialized knowledge.
• Operate a forklift to move, align, and position parts.
• Measure, cut, and thread pipes; replace air lines using hand tools.
• Assemble subassemblies, major components, and equipment.
• Test functionality to ensure proper operation.
• Repair broken parts using hand tools and welding equipment.
• Enter car repair information via an electronic keyboard system.

Marginal Functions

• Maintain a clean work environment.
• Set up and operate metalworking tools such as welders or grinders as needed.
• Perform other duties as assigned by a supervisor.

• Complete tasks within specified time standards.
• Meet customer requirements (AAR, FMO, FRA, TTX, etc.).
• Comply with all work rules.
• Work safely to avoid health and safety risks to self and others.

Physical Requirements

• Standing, hearing, and seeing for 8–10 hours per day.

• Reaching below waist, twisting, and feeling for 2 hours per day.
• Sitting, climbing, balancing, crawling, reaching overhead, and talking for 1 hour or less per day.
• Frequent standing, kneeling, stretching, reaching, gripping, and bending at the waist.
• Regular walking, crouching, and twisting while standing.
• Occasional sitting, crawling, and twisting while sitting (1 hour or less).
• Lifting car parts weighing 1–80 lbs. throughout the day (10–25 lbs. frequently; 25–50 lbs. regularly; over 50 lbs. occasionally).
• Pulling 10–25 lbs. frequently; 25–50 lbs. regularly; over 50 lbs. occasionally.
• Carrying 50–75 lbs. occasionally.
• Using wrenches weighing up to 10 lbs. to tighten bolts (occasionally, up to 4 hours).

• Knowledge: Mechanical skills.
• Skills: Welding and cutting.

Working Conditions

• Work Environment:
  • Outdoor work for 8–10 hours per day.
  • Exposure to heat, cold, and humidity.
  • Regular work at heights.
  • Occasional work around moving machinery.
• Environmental Conditions:
  • Exposure to welding and burning fumes, odors, dust, gases, and uncomfortable noise (10 hours/day).
  • Regular work in hot temperatures; occasional work in cold temperatures.
  • Occasional driving of automotive equipment.
  • Regular work with oil, grease, and vibrations.
  • Occasional work alone.
• Hazard Exposure:
  • Mechanical hazards from tools.
  • Electrical hazards from welders.
  • Radiant energy from torches (frequent, 10 hours/day).

Schedule

8 to 10 hour shifts; work hours and rest days may change regularly.

Reporting Relationship

Reports to a line supervisor or work group supervisor.
