Quarterly Lecturer: Public Health Science (2026-2027 Pool)

Temporary position in the Department of Public Health at Santa Clara University, a Jesuit, Catholic institution. This is an applicant pool; positions are hired as needed based on programmatic requirements and candidate qualifications.

About the Role

The successful candidate will teach undergraduate courses in Public Health Science, with specific assignments determined by academic qualifications and departmental needs. The university operates on a quarter system (10 weeks of instruction plus an 11th week for final examinations). Instructors will teach no more than 2 courses per quarter and no more than 4 courses across the fall, winter, and spring quarters. All classes are currently planned for in-person instruction, though partial online delivery may be required if county or university health conditions deteriorate.

Pay

$9,839 for each 4- or 5-unit course.

Responsibilities

• Conduct and attend all assigned class meetings in a prepared manner, demonstrating command of the discipline.
• Design and evaluate assignments aligned with course descriptions and learning outcomes, providing timely feedback to students.
• Maintain regular weekly office hours on campus.
• Submit accurate and fair student grades to the Office of the Registrar by designated deadlines.
• Administer numerical and narrative course evaluations for all courses.
• Teach from an approved syllabus for University Core courses or collaborate with the department chair to design and submit a syllabus for approval by the relevant Faculty Core Curriculum Committee.

Service duties (e.g., committee work) are not required for this position, though attendance at department meetings or activities may be invited.

Qualifications

Basic Qualifications

• Terminal degree (DrPH, Ph.D.) in Public Health, Sociology, or a closely related field.
• Demonstrated excellence in teaching key sociological and public health theories, including intersectionality.
• Experience examining and teaching how categories of social difference (e.g., race, class, gender) are socially constructed and contribute to health inequities at the undergraduate level.
• Excellent communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with inclusive pedagogical practices that promote access and academic success for all students.
• Experience teaching and mentoring a diverse population of undergraduate students.

Additional Information

Employment is subject to the terms of a collective bargaining agreement between the university and the Service Employees International Union Local 1021. Approved telecommuting must be performed within California, Nevada, Oregon, Washington, or Illinois.
